(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 11)--The William Woods University women's soccer team earned its fourth consecutive victory with a 4-2 decision over Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday night on Firley Field. It was the American Midwest Conference opener for the Owls.
The Owls had to play from behind in the first half. Hannibal-LaGrange took an early lead on a goal from Fernanda Miacci in the 12th minute. The lead would hold-up until the 34th minute.
Freshman
Amy Faus (Waterloo, Ill.) scored off an assist from freshman
Kristen Schildz (St. Louis, Mo.) to tie the match. Neither team would score during the remainder of the half.
HL-G scored quickly again in the second half. Following a corner kick from Miacci, Katelyn Fray chipped a shot over goalie
Anna Hatfield (Desoto, Ill.) in the 52nd minute to give the Trojans a 2-1 advantage.
WWU answered the challenge with three unanswered goals to earn the win.
Junior
Anne Weaver (St. Charles, Mo.) made a move from the left wing and was taken down inside the box in the 53rd minute. Christine Hubbman was issued a yellow card which resulted in a penalty kick for Weaver. Weaver found room inside to top right corner to tie the match again at two.
The Owls struck again quickly to take the lead. Junior
Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) played a header into the box to find the right foot of a streaking Weaver. Weaver sent another shot by the HL-G goalie to give the Owls a lead they would never surrender.
Freshman
Kristen Schildz (St. Louis, Mo.) added the final goal for the Owls in the 80th minute. She scored on an assist from junior
Caty Newbold (Jefferson City, Mo.).
The Owls and Trojans each recorded 12 shots. WWU put seven on-goal. The Trojans placed five on-goal.
Hatfield had three saves for the Owls in the win.
Woods improves to 4-1 on the season, 1-0 in the AMC. HL-G falls to 1-2-1 on the year, 0-1 in the AMC.
William Woods will return to action on September 15 versus Missouri Valley College. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 pm at Firley Field.
