(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 8)--The William Woods University women's soccer team took care of Iowa Wesleyan College 6-0 on Wednesday night at Firley Field. The Owls improve to 3-1 on the season. The victory over IWC was the third consecutive shutout victory for the Owls.
The Owls found the back of the net early in the match. Freshman
Amy Faus (Waterloo, Ill.) scored in the second minute to give the Owls the only lead they would need. It was her second goal of the season.
The Owls would add two more first half goals en route to a 3-0 lead at the break. Junior
Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) pushed a header past the goalie in the 14th minute to collect her fifth goal of the young season. It came on an assist from freshman
Jessica Varner (Godfrey, Ill.). Varner teamed with junior
Melissa Roewe (O'Fallon, Ill.) on another goal in the 20th minute. It was the first goal of the season for Roewe.
The pressure continued for the Owls in the second half. Junior
Kristen Pelley (St. Peters, Mo.) scored off another assist from Varner in the 77th minute to push the lead to 4-0. Varner capped an impressive night by scoring in the 82nd minute. Her goal came on an assist from Sanders.
The Owls completed the scoring in the final seconds. Pelley scored her second goal of the night with under 30 seconds remaining to account for the sixth and final goal. Weaver was credited with the assist.
William Woods outshot Iowa Wesleyan (1-4) 23-1. The Owls had 11 shots on goal.
Sophomore
Anna Hatfield (Desoto, Ill.), and freshman
Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.), combined on the shutout victory.
The Owls will return to action on September 11. They host Hannibal-LaGrange College at 7 pm on Firley Field. It will serve as the American Midwest Conference opener for the Owls.
