Trojans Upset Owls

The William Woods University women's soccer team dropped its first American Midwest Conference match of the season on Tuesday evening.  The Owls fell to Hannibal-LaGrange University 1-0.
 
The first half ended in a scoreless duel.  The Owls outshot the Trojans 9-4 but could not find the back of the net.  WWU goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.) recorded three saves in the opening half.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange (5-7, 4-2) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 50th minute.  Sarah Hammock scored off an assist from Melissa Ramirez to give the Trojans a 1-0 advantage.
 
The Owls outshot the Trojans again in the second half.  WWU recorded 11 shots to the Trojans six.  Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) led the Owls with five shots.  All five were on goal.
 
Abernathy finished the night with four saves.  Whitney Voepel had nine saves for the Trojans.
 
WWU falls to 6-4-1 on the year and 5-1 in the AMC.  The Owls still lead Park University (4-1) by percentage points in the AMC standings.  Woods will return to action Saturday.  They travel to AMC rival Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis, Mo.  Kick-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
