The William Woods University women's soccer team defeated visiting Benedictine University-Springfield tonight in the American Midwest Conference postseason tournament quarterfinals. The Owls defeated the Ravens 6-1 on Firley Field.
Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) scored in the sixth minute of play off an assist from
Melissa Roewe (O'Fallon, Ill.) to give the Owls an early 1-0 advantage. Presley Kerber tied the match in the 18th minute for BU-S to tie the match.
Ashley McCaffrey (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) gave the Owls the lead for good in the 21st minute. McCaffrey scored off an assist from Sanders.
Caty Newbold (Jefferson City, Mo.), Sanders and Roewe all scored in the second half to preserve the win. Sanders,
Brittany Graue (St. Louis, Mo.) and
Jessica Varner (Godfrey, Ill.) each had an assist in the second half.
Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.) earned the victory in goal. Abernathy recorded three saves for the Owls.
William Woods (8-8-2) dominated the shot totals. The Owls took 26 shots on the evening. They placed 13 shots on goal. BU-S (1-17-1) took six shots on the night. The Bulldogs placed four shots on goal.
The Owls advance to the semifinals of the AMC postseason tournament Monday afternoon. They will travel to Hannibal-LaGrange University for a 1 pm kick-off.
