Women's Soccer Falls to Avila

The William Woods University women's soccer team dropped its season opener Tuesday night on Firley Field. The Owls lost to visiting Avila University 3-0.
                      
The two teams went to the half tied 0-0. The Eagles (1-0) outshot the Owls 5-2 in the first half.
                      
Avila scored its first goal in the 57th minute on a goal from Alyssa D'Egidio. The Eagles added two more goals in the next three minutes to take the 3-0 victory.
 
William Woods (0-1) recorded six shots on the night. Kristen Pelley (St. Peters, Mo.) and Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) each had two shots in the loss. Anna Hatfield (Desoto, Ill.) and Melissa Roewe (O'Fallon, Ill.) each recorded a shot on goal.
 
Avila recorded 14 shots on the night. The Eagles put nine shots on goal.
 
WWU goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.) had six saves in the loss. AU goalkeeper Stephanie Gartner recorded two saves.
 
The Owls return to action on September 2 and 3. The Owls host American Midwest Conference newcomer Benedictine University-Springfield at 7 pm on Friday night. They host University of the Ozarks at 1 pm on Saturday.
