The William Woods University women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2011 season Friday night on Firley Field. The Owls defeated AMC newcomer Benedictine University-Springfield 5-0. The Owls are now 1-1 on the season, and 1-0 in the AMC.
Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) found the back of the net twice in the opening half. Sanders scored off an assist from
Melissa Roewe (O'Fallon, Ill.) in the fourth minute of play. She added her second goal in the 26th minute off an assist from
Kristen Pelley (St. Peters, Mo.).
The Owls took a 3-0 lead into halftime on a goal from
Jamie Bond in the 38th minute. Sanders assisted on the goal.
Woods added two more goals in the second half. Sanders recorded the hat-trick with a goal in the 59th minute of play.
Ashley McCaffrey (Lake St. Louis, Mo.) capped the scoring in the 80th minute.
Two Owls combined on the shutout in goal Friday night.
Anna Hatfield (Desoto, Ill.) recorded one save in the first half.
Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.) recorded two saves in the second half.
The Owls fired 23 shots on the night. They placed 11 shots on goal. BU-S (1-2, 0-2) managed only five shots on the evening.
William Woods will return to action on Saturday. The Owls host the University of the Ozarks at 1 pm on Firley Field.
