Owls Fall To Park In AMC Semifinals

PARKVILLE, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Monday afternoon after falling 5-0 to Park University. The Owls couldn't recover from a pair of unlucky circumstances in the first half that handed the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.

The first spot of bad luck came in the ninth minute, as Park's Juneille Watkins dribbled into toward the endline on the right side of the penalty box. She cut a cross level with the six and as Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.) was diving to cut out the cross, she collided with one of her defenders. The Owls nearly caught a break as Dana Hemmingsen wasn't able to get a clean touch on the ball, but she was able to tap it into the net before WWU could recover.

Another collision in the 31st minute gifted the Pirates their second goal, as Abernathy tried to punch out a cross in a big crowd. She got jostled as she was going for the ball and couldn't get a clean punch. The ball fell to Nichole Hemmingsen, but the Owls had a defender on the back post able to save the initial shot. Alexandria Erickson was able to convert the rebound, however.

Park added a third before half and were able to punch in two more on the counter as William Woods pressed for a goal.

The Owls end their season with an overall record of 10-8-1.
