FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team recorded its first shutout of the season as they defeat Central Baptist College 2-0 on Friday evening.
William Woods (2-1) used a 29-7 shot advantage on the night to score the victory. The Owls defense was especially tough during the first half, as Central Baptist College (2-3) recorded just one shot for the frame.
"I'm very pleased with our effort tonight," said Head Coach Randy Hall. "You look at the box score and see a 29-7 advantage in shots, the two goals tonight doesn't tell the story of how dominate we were. Central Baptist had a very talented goalkeeper that made some great plays for them tonight."
Junior Rachel Meyer, who had three shots on goal during the game's first 20 minutes, but she broke through with a goal during the 26th minute to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage. It was the second consecutive scoring game for the Granite City, Ill., native, as she always tallied the Owl's first goal against Spring Hill College last Saturday.
"She does so much for us," said Hall of his forward. "She is our main pressure player up front, because she turns people over a lot and wins a lot of balls. She has been a great addition to our team."
Sophomore Jordan McNamara recorded her first goal of the season in the 50th minute as she played a well-placed touch from Jenna Vogt, giving William Woods the 2-0 lead.
Central Baptist College regrouped and had a couple of scoring chances late during the second half, but Britany Griffin, who was making her first career start, stopped any hope of a Lady Mustang goal by recording the shutout.
It was the first shutout for an Owl's goalkeeper since Oct. 17, 2012 when William Woods defeated Stephens College 5-0.
"Brittany did a real solid job for us in her first start. She was a great box commander and played the ball in the air. We are real pleased with the performance she put out there tonight," said Hall.
William Woods will be back in action on Tuesday as they face Culver-Stockton College. Kick-off for the game is set for 7 p.m.
