Women's Soccer Squares Off With Columbia College In The AMC Tournament Semifinals On Monday

Griffin has allowed just one goal the last four games in net.
COLUMBIA, Mo.—After collecting a 3-0 victory over Benedictine University at Springfield in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday, the William Woods University women's soccer team will look to advance to the AMC Finals, as they go toe-to-toe with No. 1-seed Columbia College on Monday. Kick-off will start at 6 p.m.

The Owls (11-6-2; 8-1-2 AMC), outshot the Bulldogs, 17-13 in the game on Friday night, while goaltender Brittany Griffin made four saves in the outing, giving her now four shutouts on the season.

Offensively, senior Rachel Meyer led the team, scoring two goals, which gives her 12 on the year, while junior Jordan McNamara added the other goal in the game.

The scoring got started in the 21st minute, as a shot from Sarah Krispin was saved by Bulldog goaltender Lindsay Taylor, however, the ball got away from her and Meyer was able to kick the loose ball into the back of the net, giving WWU a 1-0 lead.

The team was able to extend its lead out to 2-0, just 11:00 minutes later, as Brittainy German's leading pass inside the Bulldog box, found McNamara, who scored past the out-stretched arms of Taylor.

In the second half, the Owls scored its third and final goal of the game in the 63rd minute, as a free kick from Ashley Deckard, beyond midfield, was flicked on by Jamie Palermo to Meyer and she was able to dribble down the left side of the box and beat Taylor on the near side post, to give WWU a three goal victory.

After spending the first half of the season under the .500 mark, the team has played some quality soccer since October 12th, as they have won eight out of its last nine games, including its current four-game winning streak, where they have outscored its opponents 13-1.

During the last four games, Meyer has paced the team offensively, scoring six goals and adding two assists on just 13 shots, while Krispin, McNamara and German have totaled two goals each.

In net, Griffin has played in 315:00 minutes, making 16 saves, for a save percentage of .941 and owns a goals against average of .286.

The last time the Owls and Cougars (11-5-1; 10-1 AMC) met was on October 8th, where Columbia outshot WWU 35-14 and won 1-0 on a goal from Kelly Ross in the 20th minute. Since then, however, William Woods has been playing some of the best soccer in the Nation.

The Cougars have been on a roll as of late, winning 11 of its last 12, including being on a three-game winning streak, where they have outscored its opponents 18-0.

The team was able to advance to the AMC Semifinals, after defeating Lindenwood University-Belleville, 6-0. Tori Magaletta scored two goals on the night, while Kelli Westhues, Jordan Poire, Mercedes Kercado and Katelyn Palmer also tallied a goal.

On the season, Ross leads the way with a team-high 11 goals in 14 games, while Laurie Frew is second on the team, with nine goals and four assists on 57 shots. Magaletta has added six goals and a team-high 10 assists, while Tiffany Weaver and Poire have scored five goals each.

In goal, Flavia Rosado has played in 1560:00 minutes, allowing just 14 goals, while making 62 saves, for a save percentage of .816 and has a goals against average of .810.

The winner of this game will advance to the AMC Finals and face the winner of the Missouri Baptist and Park University. Kick-off for that game starts at 12 p.m.
