Women's Soccer Picks Up Its First AMC Victory Against Park University

FULTON, Mo. – In a shootout at Firley Field, the William Woods University women's soccer team recorded its first American Midwest Conference (AMC) win, as the team defeated Park University 3-1 on Wednesday night.
 
Right out of the gate, both the Pirates and Owls offense started aggressively, and that set the tone throughout the entire AMC match-up, as both teams combined of 33 shots on the night.
 
The Owls got on the board first, as leading scorer, Jordan McNamara, scored her fifth goal on the season from teammate Elyssa Cappaert at the 4:06 mark, giving WWU the 1-0 early lead.
 
Despite being outshot by the Pirates in the first half 9-4, the Owls defense remained strong throughout the 45:00 minutes and didn't let the assert offense of Park find the back of the net.
 
Coming out of the second half, WWU had a solid start, with three minutes into the final frame, a costly foul by the Pirates set up a penalty kick for WWU. Senior, Rachel Meyer took the penalty kick, as she found the net past Park's goaltender, making the Owls lead 2-0.
 
The Owls offense maintained to dominate, as Meyer scored her second goal on the night in the 59th minute, giving the Owls a 3-0 advantage.
 
Park University forward, Shnell Briscoe broke the clean sheet for the Owls in the 79th minute, as she collected her third goal of the season from teammate Karly Boese, making the score 3-1, however, the surge was not enough and the Owls secured a 3-1 victory.
 
WWU was lead by Meyer in the shot department, as she totaled four shots and two goals on the night, while McNamara added two shots and a goal. 
 
Goalkeeper, Brittany Griffin, who was named AMC Defensive Player of the Week, tied her career-high in saves (nine), pushing her total to 28 saves on the year and collected her first win on the 2014 season.
 
"It is always a quality win against a talented team like Park University," said head coach Randy Hall. "The team did a great job tonight functioning as a unit and working hard to give a great effort together."
 
Hall added, "I know there were a lot of Owl fans out there that followed this game and I am sure that the manner of our program was represented well tonight."
 
The Owls look to maintain its win streak on Friday night, as they pay a visit to Missouri Valley College. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
