MARSHALL, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team suffered a tough loss on Friday night, as the Owls were defeated 4-0 by (RV) Missouri Valley College.
The Owls (2-4-1: 1-1 AMC) held the strong offense of the Vikings scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the match-up, despite being outshot 25-4 on the night.
The Vikings leading scorer, Inma Martinez collected her tenth goal of the season at the 20:44 mark, as she took a pass from teammate Kendra Clamors, to give MVC a 1-0 lead.
The Owls defense was able to hold Missouri Valley scoreless for the remainder of the half, but it didn't come easy, as the Vikings collected 15 first half shots to just three for WWU.
Coming out of the second half, the Owls continued to hold the Vikings just to one goal until the 72nd minute when Andrea Garcia scored her third goal of the season from teammate Belen Lafuente, making the Vikings lead 2-0.
Shortly after, Garcia scored her second goal of the night, as she found the back of the net at the 73:08 minute, giving the Vikings a 3-0 advantage.
With only two minutes remaining in the game, MVC forward, Katlyn Jaques, poked another goal past WWU goaltender,
Brittany Griffin, securing the Vikings a 4-0 victory.
The Owls four shots in the match-up were recorded by
Jordan McNamara,
Haley Pipes,
Ashley Deckard and
Rachel Meyer.
In the net for the Owls, American Midwest Conference (AMC) Defensive Player of the Week, Griffin, recorded a new career-high saves with 12 on the night, pushing her total to 40 on the season.
"The girls represented our student body in admirable fashion tonight," said head coach
Randy Hall. "The game was pretty physical and a lot of things did not go our way but we continued to really battle in a very classy manner."Â
The Owls will be back in action on September 27
th, as they travel to Batesville, Arkansas and face AMC opponent William Baptist College. Kick-off is set for 11 a.m.
