Volleyball Sweeps Past Freed-Hardeman And Moves To 3-0 In The AMC

HENDERSON, Tenn.—The William Woods University volleyball team moved to 3-0 in American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Saturday afternoon, as the Owls defeated Freed-Hardeman University in three sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-9).

In the first set, it was back-and-forth between the two teams', but it was the Owls (12-9; 3-0 AMC), jumping out to a 15-14 lead, after a kill by senior Kristen Bauer.

The team would extend its advantage out to 22-18, after a kill by Stephanie Davis and despite a late rally from Freed-Hardeman (5-7; 1-2 AMC), WWU was able to take the first set 25-22.

The Owls totaled a match-high 12 kills in the first set and earned an attack percentage of .259, while FHU had 10 kills, but totaled seven errors and an attack percentage of .097.

In the second set, WWU was in complete control, as they took a 19-9 lead, after a kill by Abby Ferguson. From there, the Owls were able to cruise the rest of the set, going on for the 25-15 win and take a two game lead on the Lady Lions.

William Woods totaled 10 kills and an attack percentage of .350 in the second set, while FHU continued to struggle, having six kills, six errors and an attack percentage of .000.

It was more of the same in the third set, as WWU jumped out to a 19-7 lead, after an attack error by FHU and the team never looked back, going on for the 25-9 set and match win.

The Owls totaled 33 kills in the victory and were led by freshman Abbi McKnelly, having a team-high eight kills, zero errors and a match-high attack percentage of .421.

Ferguson was second on the team with seven kills, while Bauer and Davis both added six each. Freshman setter Brittney Engelbrecht totaled 27 assists and tied for the team lead with seven digs, along with senior Abbie O'Mara and McKenna Hisel.

The Owls will now return home and play four AMC games from September 30th until October 10th. First-up for WWU is St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Tuesday night. First-serve is set for 7 p.m.
