Men's Soccer Upset Attempt Comes Up Short Against No. 16 Lyon College

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team had its four game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, as the Owls fell 1-0 to the No. 16 ranked Lyon College in a hard fought battle.

The Owls (6-4-1; 2-2-1 AMC), knew in order to take down the undefeated Scots and AMC standing leaders, they would have had to play 90:00 minutes of perfect soccer and they did just that, expect for Lyon College was able to find the back of the net, for the 1-0 win.

Right from the beginning whistle, fans knew that it was good to be a good game, as throughout the physical battle there were a combine 36 fouls called.

WWU had its opportunities to draw blood first in the match;-up, as Jesse Jordan and Anthony Moscatello each took healthy shots within the first three minutes of the half, however, missing wide of the posts.

Then at the 25:55 mark, the Scots leading scorer Jonathan Ray would attempt to get Lyon College on the board but Conor Cable collected one of his two saves on the day, keeping the game scoreless.

The score would remain a 0-0 draw, as the horn sounded for half time. WWU outshot  the Scots 7-5, while both defenses were relentless in the first 45:00 minutes of play.

Coming out of halftime, the momentum quickly shifted in the Owls favor, as Ray received his second yellow card of the game, resulting in a red card and forcing the Scots to play a man down the rest of the game.

However, that would all change at the  69:14 mark, as Estiven Garcia buried his shot from 25 yards out, past Cable in the left corner of the goal, to give the Scots the go ahead 1-0 lead.

The Owls almost had the equalizing goal in the 88th minute with a touch from Moscatello, but he was called off sides and the goal was called off, which let the Scots run down the remaining two minutes in regulation to go on to secure the 1-0 victory over WWU.

William Woods ended the game outshooting the Scots 17-11, but just couldn't have one find the back of the net, as Harrison Bray paced the way for the Owls with four shots.

The Owls return to action on Wednesday October 7th, as the team travels to St. Louis to square off with Harris-Stowe State University for a 3:00 p.m. kick-off, before returning back to Firley Field next Saturday with an AMC match-up with Freed-Hardeman University at 3:00 p.m.
