CHICKASHA, Okla.—The No. 19-ranked William Woods University softball team dropped its first two games in Oklahoma on Friday, as they fell to University of Science and Arts 12-0 (6 innings) and Mid-America Christian University in the nightcap, 8-4.
University of Science and Arts 12 No. 19 William Woods University 0The Owls (1-3), had a forgettable game one against the Drovers (9-1), as WWU was limited to five hits, while USAO scored 12 runs on 16 hits.
Freshman
Allison Waskow got the ball in game one, but was chased from the outing after one inning of work, as the Drovers scored five runs on four hits against Waskow.
Another freshman,
Bre Logan, came on in relief and kept the Drovers bats silent for the next three innings, until they scored two more in the fifth and five runs in the sixth, to go on for the 12-run victory.
Emily Murphy led the WWU offense, as she went 2-for-3.
Sydnae Hatton,
Kacey Scharnhorst and
Macy Wierschem were the other players to contribute one hit.
USAO, meanwhile, was led by hurler Summer Leitka, as she went the distance, allowing just five hits and struck out seven batters. Offensively, Kayla Adams and Ciara Kuestersteffen combined to go 5-for-7, with two runs scored and six RBI. Dani Warren went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Shania Beck went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Mid-America Christian University 8 No. 19 William Woods University 4In game two, it was the Owls jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as
Hannah Campbell led off with a double to right center. After Hatton's ground out moved Campbell to third base, she was able to score on a passed ball during Scharnhorst at-bat and give the team an early advantage.
MACU (5-3), would strike back against Owls starter
Julie Scheer in the top of the second, as they scored two runs on three hits, as they got RBI singles from Mykah Smith and Taylor Green, to take a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Evangels would extend its lead out to 4-1, as they scored one run in the third and another in the fourth, to gain some breathing room over the Owls. In the bottom of the fourth, WWU got its offense going again, as
Alexi Cavins led the inning off with a single and was able to advance to second base two batters later, as
Megan Cooper also singled to right field.
Campbell then collected another hit up the middle, which loaded up the bases for pinch hitter
Caroline Sicht and the senior came through, as she doubled to right center, clearing the bases and tying the game up at 4-4, after four innings of play.
MACU would retake the lead in the top of the fifth, as Hannah Lynch, who led the inning off with a walk, was able to score later in the inning on a passed ball, to give the Lady Evangels a 5-4 lead. They would go on to score another run in the top of the sixth, two more in the seventh and go on for the four run victory over WWU.
The Owls totaled nine hits in the game, as Campbell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Cavins also added two hits and one run scored. Sicht was the leading RBI getter with three, while Hatton, Sicht,
Madison McCormick and Cooper added one hit each.
On the rubber, Scheer took the tough loss, as she went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and struck out two, but walked three batters. Waskow came on in relief, worked 3.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out three batters.
Kelcie Wolf, meanwhile, picked up the win for MACU, going 4.0 innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out eight. Caitlin Swain earned the save for the Lady Evangels, going 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and struck out three batters.
Offensively, Mid-America Christian totaled 11 hits and were led by Smith going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Green went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while designated hitter Natalie Bissell went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
The Owls will look to get back to its winning ways on Saturday morning, as they will take on (RV) MidAmerica Nazarene University at 10 a.m., followed by a showdown with Friends University at 12 p.m.
