Baseball Picks Up Its Third AMC Victory On The Year In Dominating Fashion Over Lyon College

FULTON, Mo. – The (RV) William Woods University baseball team picked up a huge 14-3 victory in game three of the series against Lyon College on Monday afternoon.

After dropping the first two games in the three game series yesterday against Lyon College, the Owls (14-5; 3-2 AMC) took the third game in dominating fashion, as the team amassed 14 runs on 13 hits.

Today, it was WWU to strike first, as the offense started off strong in the bottom of the first inning, plating four runs. Larry Price and Cody Stewart would get things started by both getting hit by a pitch. Then with an Austin Clapp ground out advancing the runners, Jordan Dey tallied his 20th RBI on the season with a single, scoring Price and getting the Owls on the board quickly. Next batter, Nick Spagnola would execute a perfect squeeze bunt to reach first base safely and scoring Stewart, giving Owls the early 2-0 lead. Alex St. Pierre would get into the action by reaching first on a LC error, scoring Dey and shortly after, senior Stephen Kohler would come up and single to left field to plate the fourth run on the inning and making the score 4-0 for the Owls.

Bottom of the third the Owls would put two more runs on the board, after lead off singles from Dey and Spagnola, after they both stole a base, it put runners on third and second for Kohler, who scored Dey on a fielder's choice to make the score 5-0. Konrad Kemper, the next Owls batter hit a blurper to shallow left which would score Spagnola and pushing William Woods advantage to 6-0 over LC.

The Owls offense wasn't done for the day, as the team put together a four hit, seven run fourth inning. Stewart got it all started with a shot to deep left center for his second triple on the year, then with another hit batter, and a sacfrice bunt, St. Pierre singled to shallow right field, scoring Stewart and Clapp. St. Pierre added his fifth stolen base on the season to put him in scoring position for Kohler up at the plate. After a Scots error and a single by Kemper, St. Pierre crossed the plate forcing Lyon to make a pitching change.  On the fourth hit batter for the Owls on the day, Grant Garrett reached first base to load the bases, then Price drew a walk to move everyone up 90 feet and scoring Kohler, making the Owls lead at 9-0. After hitting through the order, Stewart came up again to add a double to this seventh inning rally, clearing the bases and pushing the score to 13-0.

LC, however, would respond in the top of the fifth by scoring two runs off of two hits. After a walked batter, Issac Struense would single to shallow center putting a Scot runner in scoring position, then after a WWU error two Scots would come across home plate, putting the first runs on the board for LC on the day, and making the score 13-2 still in favor of the Owls.

The sixth inning, both teams would punch one more run across and after collecting three outs in the top of the seventh, the Owls would cruise to collect the 14-3 victory over the Scots, although despite picking up its third AMC win, the Owls lost the series(2-1) against the Scots.
The Owls had three players record three hits on the afternoon, who included Stewart, Dey and Spagnola. Stewart was red hot from the plate, going 3-for-3, collecting a team-high three RBI's, added a triple, double and scored two runs, while Spagnola also had a strong outing batting perfect on the day (3-for-3), with a RBI and run scored. Kemper chipped in two hits and two RBI's on the win, as Kohler and St. Pierre each contributed a hit.

On the mound, John Cavness had a strong performance, pitching 5.2 innings to record the win for the Owls, giving up seven hits and only three runs, while striking out seven and walking just two Scot batters.

"I loved our toughness today, bouncing back with a big win after two losses yesterday verses a very good Lyon ball club," said head coach Darren Munns.  "John Cavness gave us a big lift on the mound, and our offense put together some big innings."

WWU return to action tomorrow afternoon, by going on the road with a nine inning match-up against Culver-Stockton College, in hopes of a season series sweep. The first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m

The Owls and Wildcats met last week, which saw the Owls escape with the 4-2 victory.  Clapp lead the way for the Owls by going 3-for-4 from the plate, while Price, Dey, Spagnola and St. Pierre all added a hit in the win.  Since the last meeting, the Owls have went 3-2, while CSC dropped a doubleheader in the hands of Benedictine College last Saturday.
