Box Score CANTON, Mo.—The (RV) William Woods University baseball teams' offense continued rolling against Culver-Stockton College on Tuesday night, as the Owls defeated the Wildcats, 8-1.
The Owls (15-5; 3-2 AMC), totaled eight runs on 15 hits and were led by
Austin Clapp, as the senior third baseman went 3-for-4 at the dish and added a game-high three RBI.
Alex St. Pierre, a Charleston, South Carolina, native, also continued to swing the bat well, as he went 3-for-5 with one run scored. Senior
Nick Spagnola led the Owls in hits (four), in five plate appearances and added two runs scored.
Stephen Kohler went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while leadoff hitter
Larry Price went 2-for-3 and scored once for WWU.
Konrad Kemper, meanwhile, went 1-for-5, but contributed two RBI.
On the mound, starter
Kyle Marburger put in a strong outing for WWU, as he went 4.1 innings, allowing one run (zero earned) on three hits and struck out six. The win, however, went to reliever
Ryan Yuengel, as the senior hurler tossed two scoreless innings and struck out one.
Dylan Hastings and
James Ball closed out the final 2.2 innings, as they combined to allow just three hits, while striking out five Wildcats. (4-16; 0-2 HAAC).
The offense didn't wait long to grab the early lead, as both Spagnola and St. Pierre reached on singles, to put runners on first and second with nobody down. Kohler stepped up to the plate next and singled to center field, scoring St. Pierre and gave WWU a 1-0 lead.
After a passed ball, strikeout and a hit-by-pitch, the bases were loaded for
Larry Price and the Fremont, California, native, was able to reach base on a fielder's choice, but the Wildcat defense was able to get St. Pierre out at home to get the second out.
WWU, however, was able to score two more runs the next two batters without putting a ball in play, as
Cody Stewart and Clapp were able to work two out walks and extend the teams lead to 3-0.
In the top of the third, the Owls got things going again with St. Pierre and Kohler hitting one out singles. The duo was then brought home on Kemper's double down the left field line, which gave the team a 5-0 advantage, after three innings of play.
In the top of the fourth, the Owls pushed its lead to 6-0, as Clapp doubled to left field, which scored Price, who led the inning off with a single.
In the bottom of the fifth, C-SC would get on the board, as Angel Concepcion would reach base on a one out triple down the right field line, which scored Chris Moussa to cut the advantage to 6-1.
Clapp and William Woods would respond, as he would go on to tally another RBI in the sixth and WWU added one more run in the ninth off a Culver-Stockton error, to give the team the seven run victory.
Culver-Stockton starter Dylan Stidham took the loss, as he lasted 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out two.
William Woods will return to action in front of the home crowd this weekend, as they will take on American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe, Williams Baptist College on Friday and Saturday.
First-pitch for Friday's one nine-inning game will start at 6 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
