Baseball Earns Two Impressive Wins Over (RV) Missouri Baptist On Friday

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The No. 25-ranked William Woods University baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games on Friday afternoon, as they defeated (RV) Missouri Baptist University, 3-2 in game one and 4-2 in game two.

No. 25 William Woods University 3 (RV) Missouri Baptist University 2
In game one, it was the Spartans (34-10; 16-9 AMC), jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Eli Roundtree singled up the middle, scoring leadoff hitter Jeff Smith, who reached base on a double to start the inning.

Missouri Baptist extended its lead out to 2-0 in the next inning, as Timothy Cusick got things going with a leadoff single. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Aaron Collazo came up with the two out RBI, as he singled to right, scoring Cusick from second.

The Owls (35-9; 19-6 AMC), got one of those runs back in the fourth, as Cody Stewart and Dustin Kremer hit consecutive singles to start the inning off, which put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, Stephen Kohler executed the sacrifice bunt, allowing Stewart to score, to make it a 2-1 game.

A huge play for WWU defensively happened in the bottom of the fourth, as after hitting a single to leadoff, Cusick eventually found his way to third with one out.

Hector Candeleria hit what he thought was a sacrifice fly to left field, but after making the catch, Larry Price threw out Cusick at home, who was trying to score from third, which kept the Spartans lead at one.

In the top of the sixth, Stewart led off with a single and was able to advance to second, after Alex St. Pierre sacrificed him over. Austin Clapp followed him up with a single to left, putting runners on first and third for Kohler.

The St. Louis, Missouri, native, worked a one out walk, which chased starter Ryan Stapp from the game and brought in reliever Carl Jameson. The Owls countered with Javier Ledesma at the dish and he was able to single to left, scoring Stewart and tying the game up 2-2.

Jordan Dey then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring pinch-runner Travis Simonin, to give WWU its first lead of the game at 3-2.

That was all reliever James Ball needed, as he was able to close out the Spartans in the final two innings and secure the one run victory for WWU.

Ball, a Hillsboro, Missouri, native, earned his eighth save on the year, going 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and struck out three. Starter John Cavness, meanwhile, got the win, as the junior went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and struck out two.

Offensively, WWU totaled six hits and were led by Stewart going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Kremer, Clapp, and Ledesma added the other hits.

Jeff Smith and Cusick both led the Spartans with three hits in the game and combined for two runs scored.

In game two, it was the Spartans again, taking a 1-0 lead, this time in the bottom of the third, as Brent Zimmerman hit an infield single, scoring Justin Boman, who reached base on a WWU defensive error.

That score remained the same until the top of the fifth, as Kohler led off with a double down the left field line, which was the Owls first hit of the game, off MBU starter Michael Yarborough. Ledesma moved Kohler over to third with a sacrifice bunt and he scored one batter later, as Dey reached base on a fielder's choice, to tie the score at 1-1.

In the top of the sixth, WWU plated two runs on two hits, to take a 3-1 lead, as Price and Nick Spagnola got on base, after a walk and hit-by-pitch. Stewart then bunted and used his speed to beat the throw, which loaded up the bases for Kremer.

The Wardsville, Missouri, native, grounded into a double play, but Price was able to score from third and give the Owls a 2-1 advantage. Clapp was up next and he singled to center, scoring Spagnola and push the teams' lead out to two runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans got an RBI single from Austyn Nagamine, but with the bases loaded, the team couldn't capitalize, as reliever Dylan Hastings, worked out of the jam, getting Justin Boman to strike out swinging on the 3-2 fastball.

After a scoreless seventh inning, William Woods regained the two run lead in the eighth, as pinch-runner Alex St. Pierre was able to score from third on a passed ball, to make it 4-2 Owls.

Yet again the Spartans threatened in the bottom of the eighth, as they had the bases loaded with two outs, but Ball, who came on in relief of Hastings, was able to get Aaron Collazo to fly-out to the warning track in center, which ended the inning.

Ball, then was able to make quick work of the Spartans in the bottom of the ninth, earning his ninth save on the year and give WWU its 19th conference victory.

After Jacob Guilianelli went 2.2 innings, allowing one run (zero earned) on two hits and two strikeouts to start the game, the trio of Ryan Yuengel, Hastings and Ball, were dominant the rest of the way, as they allowed just one run on five hits and struck out eight.

Yuengel was able to pick up the win, as in his 2.2 innings, he allowed one run on zero hits and struck out four Spartans.

Offensively, the Owls totaled six hits, with Stewart, Kremer, Clapp, Kohler, Ledesma and Grant Garrett, each having one.

The two teams' will meet up for the regular season finale on Saturday morning, as due to rain in the forecast later in the afternoon, the game will now be played at 11 a.m.
