FAYETTE, Mo.—The William Woods University women's soccer team picked up its first win on the 2015 season, as the Owls defeated Central Methodist University, 1-0, on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first frame between the two teams', the Owls (1-2-1), were able to break through with 11:00 minutes left to go in the game.
After a clearance up the field from the WWU defense, the Owls offense was able to get the ball inside the 18 yard box, which allowed
Shelby Scanlan to use her speed, tip the ball around the charging Eagles (2-3), goaltender, Nikki Fleischmann and score her first goal of her career into the far corner of the net and give WWU a 1-0 lead.
CMU picked up the pressure in the final minutes of regulation, but the WWU defense, along with goaltender
Ashley Parisi, were able to come up with key stops and secure the 1-0 win for the Owls.
Parisi had another strong outing in net, earning her first shutout on the season, making seven saves.
"It was a great team win against another high quality, non-conference opponent," said head coach
Randy Hall. "I'm very happy for Shelby in scoring her first collegiate goal and hope it is the first of many to come."
He added, "We couldn't have asked for a better dress rehearsal to open conference play on Saturday against Park. CMU were physical, athletic and hardworking and really put our group to the test."
With this win, the team will look to build off it, and take it on the road to Park University on Saturday for its first American Midwest Conference (AMC) game. Kick-off will start at 12 p.m.
