PARKVILLE, Mo. - The William Woods University men's soccer team draws 1-1 after 110:00 minutes of play in its American Midwest Conference opener against Park University, on Saturday afternoon.
After coming off, yet another over time game, earlier this week, that saw the Owls (3-1-1: 0-0-1 AMC), come up short (1-0) against Central Methodist University, the team were in hopes to use that fuel to start its conference play on a strong note. Park University, however, had a different vision, as the Pirates controlled most of the game, outshooting the Owls 21-10.
Park (2-0-2; 0-0-1 AMC), put the pressure on William Woods from the starting whistle, nearly jumping out to an early lead in the first 10:00 minutes of the match, but
Conor Cable came up with a huge save to keep the game scoreless. However, at the 19th minute mark, Lucas Souza sent a pass across the field, connecting with Ignacio Flores, who then found the Pirates leading scorer, Cyril Gadu to give park the 1-0 lead.
The pirates tried to extend its lead with three minutes left in the first frame but was denied and went into the locker room with the 1-0 advantage over WWU. Park tallied 10 shots in the first half, while the Owls had just two shots.
Coming out of the half, the Owls would get a boost of energy at the 69th minute mark, as
Matheus Schmid connected with
Julian Wells, who found the back of the net with the equalizing goal for WWU.
With the clock running down in the second frame, neither team could find the answer for the winning goal and it was off to over time in Parkville, Missouri we went. In overtime, it was all Park, as the Pirates outshot WWU 5-1 but couldn't close up the AMC showdown. Despite the Owls valiant effort, the score remained the same after 110:00 minutes of play and ended the Owls AMC opener in a 1-1 tie.
Wells, collected his first goal on the season, while
Brett Hodges led the way in the shot department for WWU, as the midfielder totaled three shots and in the net, Cable had four saves in the 110:00 minutes of play.
"We played extremely tough today, said head coach
Nathan Mason. "To go on the road and get a point for the AMC is an amazing result. "We came back from being down 1-0 and had our chances to go ahead as well.
Mason added, "I couldn't be happier with the team defending and togetherness that was showed today."
The Owls get back to action on Thursday, as the team travels down i-70 to square off with Columbia College, under the lights at 7;00 p.m.
