BETHANY, Okla.—The William Woods University women's soccer team got its offense going on Saturday afternoon on the road, as the Owls defeated Southwestern Christian University, 3-1.
The Owls (2-4-1; 0-2 AMC), got its offense going early in the first half, as
Shelby Scanlan raced up the right side with the ball and was fouled just outside the 18 yard box, which awarded a free kick for WWU.
The team was able to take advantage, as
Jordan McNamara's initial shot was saved by Lady Eagles (4-2), goaltender, Kaylie Naumann, but she couldn't hold onto the rebound, allowing
Jaclyn Zilch to bury her shot into the back of the net, her first of the season, to make it a 1-0 game at the 3:50 mark.
WWU's offense continued its offensive pressure the next 10:00 minutes of play, as they outshot SCU 5-0 during the span. Its lead, however, disappeared at the 15:26 mark, as a foul was called on a WWU player inside the 18 yard box, giving the Lady Eagles a penalty shot attempt.
Jill Owens, was able to score the equalizer, her third of the season, which tied the game up at 1-1. That score remained the same until the 28
th minute, as off a throw in, Scanlan made a great cross from the right side of the box, just in front of SCU goalie Naumann and found the foot of McNamara, who kicked in her second of the season, giving WWU the lead back at 2-1.
The Owls went on to have a shot advantage of 2-1 as the half horn sounded and they went into the break up by one goal. The team totaled nine shots in the first 45:00 minutes of play, while the defense held the Lady Eagles to just five.
In the second half, WWU continued to control the pace of the game, while playing well on both sides of the ball, as they held SCU to just three shots.
William Woods was able to put the game away in the 82
nd minute, as a defensive player lifted a pass into the 18 yard box, which found the foot of McNamara, who tried to tip it over the goalie Naumann, but she made the save, however, she tipped the ball right to
Renee Meyer, who was able to score her first collegiate goal and give the Owls a two goal victory.
WWU outshot the Lady Eagles 16-8 in the outing and were led by McNamara having five shots, one goal and two assists.
Halle Schroeder, Zilch and Meyer also contributed two shots. In goal, the duo of
Ashley Parisi and
Rebecca Sturgess combined for one save.
The Owls will look to build off this victory, as they jump back into American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Tuesday, September 22
nd, as they pay a visit to St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Kick-off will start at 7 p.m.
