ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Woods University men's soccer team picked up its first American Midwest Conference win on Tuesday night, as the Owls defeated St. Louis College of Pharmacy 5-0.
The Owls (4-3-1; 1-1-1 AMC), used the offensive momentum from its season-high five goal shutout against Bethany College last Saturday, to capture is second straight shutout on the season.
Despite outshooting the Eutectics 20-2 in the first frame, the Owls didn't get on the board until half way through the first half. However, at the 20:15 mark, WWU was awarded a penalty kick, while the Owls leading scorer
Alex Severino stepped up and found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season, to give William Woods the 1-0 lead.
Then with 3:57 left until the whistle at half,
Harrison Bray netted his first goal of the season, past the Eutectics goal keeper, extending the Owls lead 2-0 and giving them a boast of energy.
The Owls put pressure on STLCOP from the very beginning of the game and headed into the break with a two goal lead, as Severino,
Rodrigo Alves and
Matheus Schmid each totaled three goals a piece to lead the team in the shot department for the first 45:00 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Owls picked up right where they left off in the first frame, as
Ian Mayr also recorded his first goal of the season at the 36:36 minute mark, pushing WWU lead up to 3-0.
Shortly after, in the 25th minute, Lendell Louis-Jacque collected his fourth assist of the year, connecting with Jullian Wells, who netted the fourth goal on the night for the Owls. The team then went on the add a fifth goal to tie its season-high with 4:33 left in the game, as Alves found the back on the net and would secure the 5-0 victory for the Owls.
William Woods came out of the gate strong and never looked back, as the team recorded a season-high 37 shots, while on the defensive side of the ball, they limited the Eutectics to just three shots. Alves, ended the night leading the team with eight shots, while one of the them landed in the net. Schmid collected five shots, while Severino and Wells each chipped in four.
Conor Cable, recorded his second consecutive shutout on the season, as the sophomore totaled one save on the night.
The Owls have a quick turn around, as the team host Culver-Stockton College tomorrow night at Firley Field with a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.
CSC is currently 5-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. The Wildcats are coming into this match-up looking to capture its third straight victory, as the team defeated St. Ambrose 3-2 and Graceland University 5-2 this past week.
On the season, Dominic Caruso leads the Wildcats offensively, posting five goals, while two of them have been game winning shots. Another offensive threat for CSC is Santigo Dirrocco, who is a top of the team in assists (four) and shots (17). Then in the net, Robert Jones has collected 10 saves in 351:42 minutes of play with a goal against average of 2.560.
