ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team extends its win steak up to four, as the team defeated Missouri Baptist University 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Owls (6-3-1; 3-1-1AMC), continues to stay hot and collects another big American Midwest Conference (AMC) victory on the road.
WWU attempted to strike first at the 34:44 mark, as
Harrison Bray placed a corner kick inside the box for the Owls leading shot taker,
Rodrigo Alves, who laced his shot just high of the goal post.
At the 28
th minute, it was MBU who found the back of the net for the first points of the game from the foot of Joshua Phillips, as Yuri Pecanha connected with Phillips for the assist, making the score 1-0 in the Spartans favor.
With time running down in the first half, the Owls had two back-to-back opportunities to score, as both
Julian Wells and
Brett Hodges shots missed wide and the score remained the same. Despite outshooting the Spartans 11 to four in the first 45:00 minutes of play, the Owls headed into halftime trailing Missouri Baptist 1-0.
Rodrigo Alves lead the team with four shots in the first half, while
Brett Hodges collected three.
Coming out of the half, the Owls put the pressure on the Spartans and at the 30:11 mark, WWU grabbed the equalizing goal, after Lendell Louis-Jacque picked his eighth assist of the year. The sophomore, stepped up to take a corner kick and placed it perfectly inside the six yard box for Jesses Bowers to head in his first goal of the year, making the score 1-1.
Shortly after, with 13 minutes left in the game, William Woods scored the go ahead goal, after
Matheus Schmid also collected his first goal of the season, burying his shot just outside the box, to give the Owls the 2-1 advantage.
The Owls weren't done, as the team extended its lead to 3-1, with less than two minutes left in play, as
Brett Hodges found the back on the net for his third goal of the season. WWU would hold onto the ball and go on to secure the 3-1 road victory over MBU.
William Woods posted an impressive 23 shots on the day, as Hodges paced the way recording nine shots, with one landing in the net. It was an all around victory for WWU, as the Owls defense was just as dominating as its offense. After letting the Spartans score first, the Owls responded by holding MBU shot less in the final frame.
Conor Cable collected on save and picked up his fourth win on the season.
The Owls return back home for its next game on October 3
rd, as the team hosts No. 16 ranked Lyon College. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at Firley Field.
