Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls Fourth Quarter Surge Comes Up Short In 63-49 Loss To No. 9 Ranked Lyon College

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University women's basketball team were in hopes to steal a huge upset on the road against the No. 9 ranked Lyon College Scots, but came up short, falling 63-49 Thursday night.

The Owls (13-6, 8-5 AMC), dropped its second consecutive game, which both of them happen to be against top No. 25 teams in the nation, putting them in conference play starting.

In the first quarter, it was all Lyon College, who jumped out to an early 17-4 lead, after an Elliot Taylor field goal. After a rocky start for the Owls, who were just 5-of-14 from the floor in the first frame, ignited a spark of energy in the final 2:00 minutes of the quarter. WWU put together a 7-0 run, to cut the Scots lead in half and got within six points (21-15), after Nia Lateju converted on the three point play.

Although, with the clock winding down, Lyon College's Jamie Jackson nailed a three pointer and a two point bucket off a WWU turnover, for a five point swing, giving the Scots the 26-11 lead.

The second quarter was a hard fought battle for both teams to find a way to score, as there was a combined 10 points the entire second 10:00 minutes of play. At the 3:00 minute mark, Scots Jamie Jackson connected again from the three point line, making the score 34-17 in Lyon's favor, as both teams headed into halftime.

William Woods ended the first frame shooting an uncharacteristic 25.0 percent from the field, while Kennedy Volkart paced the way for the Owls with eight points. Meanwhile, Lyon College shot a 41.2 percent from the floor and a red hot 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from the three point line.

The Owls came out in the third quarter shooting the ball better, however so did the Scots, as Lyon jumped out to the its largest lead of the night at 21 (46-25), after an Elliot Taylor two point bucket. WWU was able to make a dent in the Scots lead as the third quarter was coming to end and after going 2-for-2 from the free throw line, Julia Wells made the score 50-32.

The final frame is where the Owls offensive came alive, outscoring the Scots 17-13, however, it was not enough to take down Lyon College. WWU went on a 5-0 run with 3:30 left in the game to get with 11 of the Scots but that is as close as the Owls would get and Lyon College went on to secure the 63-49 win.

William Woods closed out the night pushing up its field goal percentage to 36.7 and going 11-of-13 from the charity stripe, as the Scots were 23-of-58 (39.7 percentage) from the field and shot 41.7 percent from downtown.

Three players ended the night in double figures for the Owls, as April Gebke led the way with 13 points on 6-of-9 of shooting, while Lateju added 12 points and Volkart chipped in 10 points. Julia Wells had another huge night on the boards, recording a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Owls continues its two game road trip in Arkansas on Saturday, as the team pays a visit to Central Baptist College for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
