Men’s Soccer Falls to Hannibal-LaGrange in Overtime

HANNIBAL, Mo. – The William Woods University Men's Soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Saturday afternoon as they were defeated by Hannibal-LaGrange University, 1-0, in overtime. The Trojans are currently receiving votes in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 poll.
 
The Owls were outshot in the contest 15-7 by the Trojans. Rodrigo Alves fired two shots on goal to lead the Owls. Conor Cable recorded four saves in the contest. This contest was the first time the Owls have been shutout this season.
 
The Owls return to action on Monday, October 24th when they host Park University in American Midwest Conference action. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Trojans defense and offense came out and kept the Owls quiet to start the contest. Hannibal-LaGrange recorded the first shots of the contest as they both went high. With just under 30 minutes to go in the first half, Claudio Rivadeneira hit the cross bar keeping the game scoreless.
 
The shots continued to come but the Owls defense continued to stand tall. Conor Cable made saves and the Owls defense recorded some block shots keeping the game scoreless. Before WWU first shot of the contest, the Trojans had 10 shots in the contest.
 
WWU got its first shot of the game with just under 14 minutes to go in the first half as Jesse Bowers put a shot on goal that was saved by Joaquin Hansen. After Bowers shot, the Owls had two more shot but neither would find the back of the net. Brett Hodges gave the Owls the last chance to score in the first half but his shot went high and the game went scoreless into halftime.
 
Both offenses came out firing to start the second half but the Owls had the best chances to score early as Jesse Jordan and Alves had shots on goal but Hansen recorded the saves. WWU continued to put pressure on the Trojans defense as Jordan Henderson put a shot on goal that was saved, which ended up being the last scoring chance for the Owls.
 
The best scoring chance for the Trojans came with 8:54 left in the second half as Isaac Lehmkuhl had a shot on goal but Cable made the save keeping the game scoreless. The game would go into halftime tied at 0-0.
 
Less than two into the first overtime period the Trojans scored the only goal of the contest. Rivadeneira took a pass from Ignacio Garrido and beat Cable for the game-winning goal. Hannibal-LaGrange came away with a 1-0 victory.
