Women’s Basketball Defeats Tabor, 69-64

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The William Woods University Women's Basketball team used a late fourth quarter run to comeback to defeat No. 10 Tabor College, 69-64, on Monday evening.
 
 
Tabor entered the season as they No. 10 ranked team in the NAIA Women's Basketball Division II Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll the NAIA announced last week.

A trio of Owls scored in double-figures led by Kelsey Scherder who scored a team-high 17 points in the contest. Jasmine Brown followed with 16 and Peyton Greenlee added 13 points. Brown also collected a team-high eight rebounds in the contest.
 
The Owls return to action this weekend, when they participate in the Cougar Classic.
 
Game Flow
William Wood's offense came out and took a three-point lead, 8-5, after Scherder hit a three-pointer for the Owls. WWU continued to add to its lead and after a pair of three throws by Kaycee Gerald, the Owls led by five, 10-5. The Blue Jays cut the lead down to two points, 12-10, after a three pointer by Amber Bonham. After the three, the Owls again built the lead to six, 17-11, before Tabor hit a tow pointer giving the Owls a 17-13 lead after the first quarter of action.
 
The second quarter belonged to the Blue Jays as they outscored the Owls by 10 points, 23-13, in the quarter. With the Owls ahead, 22-17, after a Brown two pointer, Tabor scored the next five points tying the game at 22-22. WWU looked as if they would pull away as they built its lead back to six, 28-22, after a Bailey Rollins three-pointer with 4:28 left in the half. However, after the three-pointer by Rollins, the Owls offense did not score again until there were 45 seconds left in the half, and during that stretch, Tabor took the lead 34-28. The Owls scored two points the final 45 seconds of the half and trailed, 36-30, at halftime.
 
William Woods looked to came back early in the third quarter as they scored the first four points, 36-34, after a Greenlee jumper in the paint. The Blue Jays continued to hold onto the lead until a pair of free throws by Greenlee put the Owls ahead, 46-45, with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter. WWU stretched the lead to four points, 49-45, after a pair of free throws by Gerald to close out the third quarter.
 
The Owls offense went cold and Tabor started heating up to start the fourth quarter of action. The Owls went the first five minutes without scoring a past as the Blue Jays went on a 13-0 run taking a 10-point lead, 59-49, prior to the Owls getting into the scoring column in the fourth quarter. The Owls did not go away as they continued to chip away at Tabor's lead. After a three-pointer by April Gebke, the Owls trailed by five, 60-55. After the Owls and Blue Jays traded baskets, Scherder hit another three-pointer putting the Owls down two, 62-60, with three minutes to go in the contest.
 
After a pair of free throws by Morgan Ediger put Tabor up four, 64-60, the Owls defense would not allow Tabor to score again as the Owls scored the last nine points of the contest. A layup by Brown put the Owls down two, 64-62, and a jumper by Scherder tied the game at 64-64. William Wood took the lead, 65-64, after a Greenlee free throw. The Owls did not give up the lead as the Owls came away with a comeback victory, 69-64, over Tabor.
