Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 9 Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University Women's Basketball team dropped its American Midwest Conference (AMC) opener to No. 9 Lyon College, 78-64, on Thursday night. The Owls led after three quarters of play but struggled to score in the fourth quarter and were defeated.
 
Peyton Greelee led the Owls with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting the ball. April Gebke followed with 14 points and Kelsey Scherder followed with 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers. Kennedy Volkart led the Owls with eight rebound in the contest.
 
WWU returns to action on Saturday, November 19th when they travel to Conway, Arkansas to face Central Baptist College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls came out in a scrappy game against the No. 9 Lyon College as within the first three minutes of the contest, as a pair of free throws by Jasmine Brown tied the game at 5-5. Both teams continued to trade lead and with 4:36 left in the game, a free throw by Greenlee tied the game at 9-9. The Owls and Scots continued to battle and with the game tied at 16-16, Bailey Rollins hit a three-pointer putting the Owls ahead 19-16, after the first quarter.
 
The game stayed close to start the second quarter as they saw the game tied two different times within the first minute and a half of the quarter. The Owls found themselves down 26-24, Kendra Vaughan hit a three-pointer putting the Owls ahead 27-26. WWU stretched the lead to 29-26, before the Scots started coming and took a 32-31 lead over the Owls. The Owls held the Scots to six points the rest of the half, and built a four-point lead, 41-37, into halftime.
 
The Owls stretched the led to seven points, 46-39, after a Scherder three-pointer with 8:51 left in the contest. With the Owls, ahead by seven, the Scots scored the next six points of the contest trimming the lead down to one, 46-45. The Owls grew the led back to six points, before Lyon came back trimming the lead down to one point. The game stayed within the four points in the game, and after a Liz Henderson the Owls lead was down to one, 56-55, after the third quarter.
 
Like the first three quarters of the fourth quarter remained close as they Owls lead a layup by Greenlee gave the Owls a two-point lead, 60-58, with 6:27 left in the contest. After this point the Owls offense went cold as they only scored four more points the remainder contest. With the Owls struggling to score, the Scots scored 20 points to close out the contest. The No. 9 Scots defeated the Owls, 78-64.
