Women’s Basketball Downs Westminster, 73-61

FULTON, Mo. – In the battle of Fulton, Missouri, the William Woods University Women's Basketball Team defeated Westminster College (Mo.), 73-61, on Tuesday evening at Westminster College.
 
Kelsey Scherder led the way for the Owls with 15 points in the contest. She was one of five Owls in double-figures. Kaycee Gerald followed with 14 points, while April Gebke had 13 for the Owls in the win. Kennedy Volkart led the Owls with seven rebounds in the contest.
 
The Owls return to action Thursday, December 1st when they return to American Midwest Conference action when they host Missouri Baptist University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
 
Game Flow
The Owls came out on fire to open the contest as Kelsey Scherder hit three straight three-pointers taking a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. A Layup by Kaycee Gerald by the Owls ahead 11-0 early in the first quarter. The lead grew to 14-0 after a three-pointer by April Gebke. The Blue Jays slowly started to come back but the Owls offense stayed hot as a three by Kendra Vaughn put the Owls ahead by 18 points, 27-9. Westminster closed the quarter with a trey trimming the Owls lead to 15, 27-12, after the first quarter.
 
WWU continued to stay out and build the lead as they scored the first four points of the quarter stretching the lead to 19 points, 31-12. The Owls continued to add to its lead and grew to 20 points, 39-19, after a jumper by Jasmine Brown. The lead grew to as many as 24 points in the first half before Westminster slowly started chipping away. The Blue Jays trimmed the lead down to 19 points, 49-30, going into halftime.
 
William Woods continued to hold onto a double-figure lead in the third quarter and after a Kennedy Volkart layup with 5:33 left in the quarter, put the Owls ahead by 19, 58-39. WWU continued to add to its lead to 24 points, 67-43, after a layup by Gebke. The Owls led the Blue Jays 67-47, after three quarters of play.
 
The Owls offense cooled off in the fourth quarter of action as WWU only scored six points in the quarter. With five minutes left in the quarter, Gerald scored a layup putting the Owls ahead, 73-54. Gerald's layup would be the last points for the Owls in the game. Westminster closed out the game scoring the last seven points of the contest but the Owls came away with a 73-61, victory. The win for the Owls was its fourth win of the season.
