HANNIBAL, Mo. – The William Woods University Women's Basketball team held Hannibal-LaGrange University to 25 percent from the floor as the Owls shot 45 percent from the field in an 81-53 victory on Tuesday night. The win was the seventh Owls of the season for the Owls.
Kaycee Gerald led the Owls with 22 points, as she shot 6-of-7 from the field including 10-of-11 from the free throw line.
Peyton Greenlee followed with 19 points, including 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.
Kennedy Volkart followed with 10 points and led the team with 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Owls return to action on Thursday, December 29th when they host St. Louis College of Pharmacy at Anderson Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls and Trojans came out and traded leads over the first couple of minutes of the first quarter. WWU found itself down, 10-6, after a jumper by Emma Penn. After Penn's jumper, WWU scored the next nine points, taking a 15-10 lead.
Jasmine Brown capped off the run with a jumper in the paint. Later in the quarter, the Owls
Kelsey Scherder hit a three-pointer putting the Owls ahead 21-13. Hannibal-LaGrange scored three more points in the quarter and the Owls led 21-16 after the first quarter.
In the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Trojans trimmed WWU's lead down to four points, 23-19, after a Sarah Cline jumper. The Owls then grew its lead back to eight points, 27-19, after jumpers by
Kendra Vaughan and
Kennedy Volkart. WWU grew its lead to double-figures after a three-pointer by
April Gebke. With 2:15 to play before halftime, the Owls led 38-27. Both teams scored two more points and heading into halftime, William Woods led, 40-29.
Early in the third quarter, the Owls led by 14 points, 46-32, after a Gerald jumper in the paint. After Gerald's jumper with 6:51 left in the quarter, the Owls went the next two minutes without scoring a point. A Volkart jumper broke the scoreless streak and grew the lead back to 11 points, 48-37. WWU grew its lead to as many 18 points in the third quarter. With 1:08 left in the quarter, Greenlee hit a three-pointer putting the Owls ahead 59-41. WWU took a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter, 59-43.
Over the first two and a half minutes, WWU's lead grew to 21 points, 67-46, after Greenlee hit two three-pointers and a pair of free throws to start the quarter. William Woods did not let the lead get below 20 points for the remainder of the contest and with 2:29 left in the quarter,
Katharyn Nolan hit a jumper putting the Owls ahead by 27, 78-51. William Woods came away with a 28-point victory, 81-53, against Hannibal-LaGrange. With the win the Owls won its fifth straight and seventh overall.
