WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The William Woods University Men's Basketball team took the lead with 12 seconds left in the contest and defeated Williams Baptist College, 80-79, on Thursday night in American Midwest Conference action.
DJ Johnson hit the game-winning-shot for the Owls (18-10, 14-6 AMC) with 12 seconds left giving WWU thevictory over Williams Baptist (13-9, 11-8 AMC).
Game FlowThe Owls opened up the contest scoring the first seven points of the contest, led by
DJ Johnson, who scored four of the seven points for William Woods. However, after taking the lead the Eagles battled back and tied the game at 8-8. Williams Baptist took the lead 13-10, with 14:19 left in the first half after an Aaron Hamby three-pointer. The Eagles led the rest of the half, and grew the lead up to nine points, 32-23, after a Reece Dunlap three-pointer. William Woods battled back trimming the Eagles lead down to four points, 43-39, at halftime.
Williams Baptist stretched their lead to nine points, 54-45, early in the second half. The Eagles continued to hold a nine point lead until 11:26 left in the second half.
Trey Mitchell hit a two pointer trimming the lead down to 60-53. Mitchell's jumper sparked a 9-2 run for the Owls, capped by a Mitchell three-pointer, putting the Owls down 62-60.
The Eagles stretched the lead back to eight points, 72-64, with seven minutes left in the contest. William Woods answered back with another 9-2 run capped by a Mitchell three, putting the Owls down one, 74-73. Williams Baptist continued to lead until 12 seconds remained in the contest, when Johnson hit a jumper for the Owls gave WWU a 80-79 lead. Williams Baptist had two shots to win the games in the last ten seconds but neither shot went in and the Owls were victorious over the Eagles.
