Softball Goes 2-0 on Day Two at St. Gregory's Tournament

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The William Woods University Softball team went 2-0 during the second day of the Saint Gregory's Tournament held in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Saturday. The Owls defeated Briar Cliff, 10-5, in game one before defeating Ottawa, 1-0, in the second game.
 
Game One

Game Flow

The Owls scored the first runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Emily Murphy singled home Sydnae Hatton putting the Owls ahead 1-0. Beth Begemann followed with a single up the middle scoring Murphy putting WWU ahead 2-0.
 
The Owls added to their lead in the top of the second inning when they extended their lead to 3-0 over the Chargers. William Woods pitcher, Bre Logan kept the Chargers offense off balance as they only mustered two hits in the first three innings of action.
 
With the score 3-0, the Chargers scored their first run of the day. With a runner on third base, Nicole Romero singled up the middle cutting the Owls lead down to 3-1.
 
The Owls added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one out Sydnae Hatton and Brailee Schulte hit back-to-back doubles. Schulte drove in Hatton on her double putting the Owls ahead, 4-1. Begemann added a second run in the inning when she doubled to left center scoring Schulte putting the Owls ahead. 5-1.
 
Briar Cliff started to mount a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning. With William Woods leading, 6-1, the Chargers scored three runs trimming the lead down to one, 5-4. However, the Owls responded quickly in the top of the sixth inning. Begemeann hit a double to left center scoring Sierra Jacques putting the Owls ahead 7-4.
 
The Chargers added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning of the game when Katlin Briley reached on a walk that scored one. Briar Cliff left the bases loaded in the inning and found themselves down 7-5.
 
William Woods put up three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning of action extending their lead to 10-5. Briar Cliff went down in order and the Owls earned their first win of the season.

Game Flow

Owls starter Allison Waskow kept the Braves hitters off balance in William Woods second game of the day. Waskow only allowed the Braves of Ottawa University to collect two hits in the contest.
 
The Owls bats did not do much better as they only collected five hits, but it was enough as the Owls scored a run in the third inning. Hannah Campbell singled to center field scoring Ari Arnold putting WWU ahead 1-0.
 
That would be all Waskow needed as the Braves collected their two hits in the first two innings. After the second inning Waskow did not allow a hit and the Owls came away with a 1-0 victory.
