Owls Swept by Freed-Hardeman

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Softball team was swept by Freed-Hardeman University on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Backer Field. The Owls dropped game one, 3-2, before losing game two, 8-4.
 
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, March 15th when they return to Backer Field when they take on the Wildcats of Baker University.
 
Game One
Game Flow

After the Owls sat down the Lady Lions in order in the first the Owls scored the first run of the contest. With one out, Hannah Campbell tripled to right center field. She scored on an Ari Arnold sacrifice fly putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Allie Carpenter singled to left field scoring two and taking a 2-1 lead. Freed-Hardeman left two runners stranded on base.
 
The Lady Lions extended its lead to 3-1 over the Owls in the top of the fifth inning. Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly in the inning, which scored Caitlyn Carter. The Lady Lions pitcher, Makenzie Prince, kept the Owls bats quiet as she struck out seven batters and only allowed six hits.
 
William Woods started mounting a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Owls scored one run and left a runner stranded on second base before dropping game one, 3-2.

Game Two
Game Flow

The Owls looked as if they were going to break onto the scoreboard early in the second game. With one out, Campbell reached on a walk and she advanced to second on an Arnold single. A wild pitched moved the runners up a base, but the next two hitters were retired and the Owls could not get a run across and went scoreless to the second inning of the game.
 
After Allison Waskow set the Lady Lions down in order, the Owls came up and broke the scoreless tie. Amanda Bouchey led off the bottom of the second with a home run. This put the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
The lead did not last lone for William Woods as Freed-Hardeman answered right back in the top of the third inning. The Lady Lions scored three runs on two hits and took advantage of three Owls errors. Mallory Spurlock helped herself out by driving in two on a double to right center.
 
Freed-Hardeman extended its lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Lions grew its lead to 8-1 after the top of the fifth inning.
 
William Woods continued battling and answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With two one and one out, Hannah Campbell singled up the middle scoring Sierra Jacques. Emily Murphy dove in Sydnae Hatton trimming the Lady Lions down to five, 8-3.
 
The Owls continued to battle and score its fourth run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runners on, Shelby LeCuru singled up the middle scoring one and trimming the lead down to 8-4. The Owls could not get another run across and left two runners stranded on base.
 
WWU's magic ran out as the first two hitters for the Owls were retired in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brailee Schulte singled up the middle but the game ended on an Owls strikeout. The Owls dropped game two, 8-4.
