FULTON, Mo. – Late inning woes hurt the William Woods University baseball team as they lost to Lyon College, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon. The Owls committed three errors in the inning, which led to five runs for Lyon in the loss for the Owls.

The Owls return to action Tuesday, March 23
rd when they host Culver-Stockton College in non-conference action. First pitched is set for 6 p.m. at Owl Field.

Ryan Phillips came out deal against the Scots of Lyon College. Phillips struck out two batters on his way to striking out a season-high 14 batters in the contest. The Owls came up in the bottom of the first and with runners on second and third with two outs, Tyler Tognarine threw a wild pitch scoring one and putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.

Phillips continued to hold off the Scots as he only allowed one Lyon player on the base over the first five innings of the contest. While he was keeping the Scots off the bases, the Owls continued to extend its lead over Lyon.

In the bottom of the third inning,
Alex St. Pierre doubled to right field. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Ryan Phillips hit a sacrifice fly scoring St. Pierre and putting the Owls ahead 2-0. The Owls stretched the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on, Phillips singled to left field scoring two.

Lyon finally got to Phillips in the top of the sixth inning of play. Kyle West led off with a double to deep right center field. The next batter, Easton Moore, hit a fly ball to right field and
Patrick Dillion laid out but could not make the catch and the ball rolled to the fence and the lead was down to 4-1. The next batter, Dylan Wooten hit a sacrificed fly scoring the second run for the Scots.

After the sixth inning, Phillips settled down and retired the Scots in order in the top of the seventh inning of play. With two runners on, and no outs, Phillips settled down and recorded three straight strikeouts, however, the third one reached on drop third strike and reached on a wild throw by the Owls catcher. After the third strikeouts, the Scots took advantage of two more errors of the Owls and broke the game open as they scored five runs in the inning taking a 7-4 lead over the Owls.

William Woods had no answer after losing the lead as they only put two runners on baseball but the Owls could not get any momentum going and dropped the third and final game, 7-4, of the series.
