Softball Drops Two to Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Softball team dropped two non-conference games to Culver-Stockton College on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls dropped game one, 2-1, and fell in game two, 4-1.
 
The Owls now have lost four straight games. William Woods return to action on Friday, March 11 when they host Williams Baptist College in its American Midwest Conference opener. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

The Wildcats jumped on Allison Waskow in the bottom of the first inning. After Sam Powers reached on a fielding error. She reached second on a passed ball and scored on a Avery Johnson single to left field. After one inning, Culver-Stockton led 1-0.
 
The Owls threatened in the top of the second inning. Beth Begemann singled up the middle starting the inning off the inning. After two fielder's choices the Owls still had a runner on first base. Alexi Cavins followed with a single to left field putting two runners on, however, the Owls threat ended on a ground out.
 
The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third inning when Culver-Stockton extended the lead to 2-0. With Andrea Rains on third base, she came in to score on a wild pitch by Waskow.
 
The Owls offense did not threaten to score again until the top of the fifth inning. Alli Massy singled to center field and advanced to second on a Cavins sacrifice bunt. Emily Murphy singled to shortstop putting two runners on. William Woods loaded the bases with one out after a Shelby LeCuru walk. However, the Owls could not get a run across the board as the next two hitters lined out and grounded out ending the inning.
 
William Woods continued to battle and threatened in the top of the seventh inning. Massey doubled to left field leading off the inning. After one out, Hillary Hentges pitch-hit for the Owls and doubled to center field scoring Massey. That would all the Owls would score as they dropped game one, 2-1 to the Wildcats.

Game Two
Game Flow

Game two started as a pitcher's duel as both Bre Logan and Megan Creek came out dealing as both pitchers only allowed five hits, one hit for each team through the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats got to Logan as they scored the first run of the game. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk put two runners on base both runners advanced to second and third on a ground out. With two on, Creek helped herself out by single home a run and putting Culver-Stockton ahead, 1-0.
 
The Owls bats remained quiet in the fourth and fifth innings as they did not collect a hit in the innings. Culver-Stockton added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Creek helped herself out again by driving in the second run of the game. After five innings, Culver-Stockton led 2-0.
 
William Woods cut the lead in half, in the top of the sixth inning. Sydnae Hatton reached on a fielding error and advanced to third on the error. Hatton scored on a Hannah Campbell grounded out, trimming the lead down to one, 2-1.
 
Culver-Stockton added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Wildcats added two runs on two hits and took advantage of one WWU error taking a 4-1 lead.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, the Owls were kept off balance as Creek set the Owls down in order and William Woods dropped game two, 4-1.
