Owls Baseball Takes Down Avila

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team earned his fifth straight win as they defeated Avila University, 13-7, on Wednesday night at Owl Field. The win for the Owls snapped a 12 game-winning streak for Avila.
 
Tanner Wetrich led the way for the Owls as he went 4-for-5 at the plate while driving in four runs for the Owls.
 
The Owls return to action on Friday, April 15th when they travel to Hannibal, Mo. to face Hannibal-LaGrange University. First pitch for Friday is set for 3 p.m.
 
Game Flow
Avila looked as if they would get to Owls starter, Jesse Remington, in the top of the first inning. With one out, the Owls looked as if they were going to score the first run of the game. On Chad Butler's single, Reid Burger was held up at third base. However, Randy Keen was thrown caught trying to go to third and was tagged out. Remington then struck out Drew Lutzke to end the inning.
 
The Owls broke the scoreless in the bottom of the second. With one out, Konrad Kemper singled to left field. Tyler Bracht followed and Larry Price, who was running for Kemper, advanced to third. Price came to score on a wild pitch putting the Owls ahead 1-0. After a walk to Matt Priest, Tanner Wetrich took the second pitch of the at bat over the left field fence for a three-run homerun putting the Owls ahead, 4-0.
 
Avila trimmed the lead in half, 4-2, in the third inning. Reid Burger singled home Chris Hendrix. The Eagles scored its second run on a Lutzke sacrifice fly.
 
William Woods stretched its lead to 7-2, in the bottom of the fourth. Drew May hit a sacrifice fly scoring Nolan Aherin for its first run of the inning. Later in the inning, Jordan Dey doubled down the left field line scoring Ryan Phillips. Dey came in to score on a Kemper double.
 
The Eagles scored its third run of the game in the fifth inning when Burger scored on a Jansen Smith error. The Owls answered right back as Wetrich scored on a Chad Butler error. After five innings of action the Owls led, 8-3.
 
WWU grew its lead to 10-3 in the sixth inning. With two outs, Matt Priest singled home Jansen Smith. Priest stole second base and came in to score on a Wetrich single to center field.
 
Avila slowly started to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh inning. The Eagles scored four runs on two hits and took advantage of two errors by the Owls. After the top of the seventh the Eagles led 10-7.
 
The Owls got one of the runs back in the bottom of the seventh as the lead grew to 11-7. Jordan Dey led off with single and Larry Price pitch ran for Dey. Price stole second base and advanced to third on Lutzke's error. After a strikeout, Kemper hit a sacrifice fly scoring Price.
 
William Woods pitchers stepped up in the eighth and ninth inning as they did not allow the Eagles to reach base in the innings. William Woods added two runs in the eighth and defeated the Eagles, 13-7, in non-conference action.
