Owls Baseball Sweeps Hannibal-LaGrange

HANNIBAL, Mo. – After dropping the opening game on Friday afternoon, the William Woods University Baseball team rebounded on Saturday as they swept Hannibal-LaGrange University in American Midwest Conference action.
 
The Owls took game one, 11-5, and won game two, 10-0, in eight innings.
 
William Woods returns to action Tuesday, April 19th when they travel to Olathe, Kan. to face MidAmerica Nazarene University in doubleheader action. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

Hannibal-LaGrange scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on second and third, Dawson Wittman grounded out to short and Nick Dabrowski scored.
 
William Woods answered right back in the third. Tanner Wetrich drew a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a strike out, Wetrich was on second base with two outs. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Ryan Phillips single tying the game.
 
After the Trojans scored its run in the second inning, Owls starter Jacob Guilianelli settled down and only allowed two hits combined in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. While Guilianelli was keeping the Trojans off the bases, the Owls bats came to life.
 
In the fifth inning, the Owls scored four runs taking a 5-1 lead over the Trojans. William Woods scored those four runs on one hit as they took advantage of walks by Hannibal-LaGrange. During the inning, the Owls drew five walks.
 
The lead grew to 10-1 in the sixth inning as the Owls bats stayed hot as they scored five more runs in the frame. Patrick Dillon collected a two run single to get the scoring started for the Owls. Later in the inning, Grant Garett singled home the third run of the inning. Anthony Davison closed out the scoring for the Owls as he scored two on a double to left-center.
 
William Woods continued to grow its lead to 11-1 in the top of the seventh. With two runners on, Jordan Dey singled to left field scoring one.
 
Hannibal-LaGrange slowly started to mount a comeback in the seventh inning. The Trojans scored four runs in the inning before the Owls got out of it and the Owls won game one, 11-5.

Game Two
Game Flow

The Owls Ryan Phillips kept the Trojans off balance for the second game of the doubleheader. Phillips, who was coming off a 15 strikeout performance in his last contest, struck out the first two hitters of the bottom of the first inning. He got the third batter to round out.
 
Jordan Dey got the scoring started for the Owls in the second inning. With a full count, Dey hit his sixth home run of the season to left field putting the Owls ahead 1-0. The Owls scored its second run on a Nick Dabrowski error and the Owls took a 2-0 lead. The Owls continued to add to its total as they scored two more runs in the inning and after an inning and a half, WWU led 4-0.
 
After allowing the first hit to the Trojans in second, Phillips induced a double play to recorded the first outs of the second inning. After an WWU error, Phillips got the next hitter out. Phillips gave up the second hit to the Trojans in the third inning but he was stranded on second base.
 
William Woods tacked onto its lead in the top of the fourth inning. With a runner on second, Ryan Phillips helped himself out at the plate as he collected an RBI single. He came around to score on a Matt Jones error. The Owls added one more run in the inning growing its lead to 7-0.
 
After allowing two hits through three innings, Phillips settled down and did not allow another run to reach base for the Trojans until the bottom of the eighth inning. Well holding the Trojans off the base, the Owls offense continued to click.
 
The Owls added its eighth run of the game in the fifth inning on a Phillips single down the left field line. The Owls offense did not score again until the top of the eighth inning. The Owls scored two more runs in the eighth inning taking a 10-0 lead over the Trojans.
 
After retiring Hannibal-LaGrange in order over the last four innings, the Trojans looked as if they had some offense clicking in the eighth. After a hit by pitch, the Trojans got its third hit of the game putting two runners on. However, Phillips got Pedro Veloz to ground out. With runners on second and third, Phillips locked in and struck out the next two hitters ending the game and keeping the shutout in tacked.
 
The Owls defeated Hannibal-LaGrange, 10-0, in eight innings as they run-ruled the Trojans. Phillips picked up the win for the Owls as he pitched a complete game shutout, while only allowing three hits and striking out 12, for his second consecutive double-digit strikeout game.
