HENDERSON, Tenn. – Ryan Phillips pitched the William Woods University Baseball team past Williams Baptist College, 8-3, in American Midwest Conference (AMC) Baseball Tournament Elimination Game on Thursday afternoon.
Ryan Phillips lifted the Owls past the Eagles as he pitched a complete game, while only allowing three runs and striking out 11 for his fourth double-digit strikeout game. Phillips was not done as he also helped himself at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI.
The Owls return to action on Carnes Field on Friday, May 6th when they play the loser of Missouri Baptist and Lyon at 2 p.m. This will be another elimination game for the Owls.
Game Flow
Phillips was on his game from the starts. The Eagles led off the game with a single but he did not stay on base long as, Phillips picked him off. He followed with two straight strike outs swinging to end the first inning.
Williams Baptist led off the second inning with a single. Phillips got the next two batters retired before giving up the second hit of the inning. With two runners on, Phillips induced Hudson Ross to ground out to second.
William Woods bats came to life in the bottom of the second inning. The Owls scored five runs on five hits taking a 5-0 lead after the frame. With two on,
Tanner Wetrich drove home two, with a double to right center. Wetrich came in to score on a
Neal Aherin single. Phillips helped himself as he grew the lead to 5-0 on a double to left-center.
The Owls added to its lead in the third as
Patrick Dillon came into score on a missed catch by the Eagles Eric Kent. Phillips kept the Eagles off the board in the fourth inning as he set WBC down in order and the Owls came back to the plate and grew its lead to 7-0 on a
Jordan Dey RBI single.
Phillips ran into a little trouble in the fifth inning as he fell behind the ledoff hitter, Tyler Eudy. On the second pitch of the at-bat was hit for a leadoff home run over the left field fence. After the home run, Phillips settled down and recorded two more strikeouts in the inning.
Williams Baptist added its second run of the game in the sixth inning when Eudy hit a sacrifice fly scoring one and trimming the lead down to 7-2.
WWU scored its eighth run of the game in the sixth inning when Phillips hit a double to left center to drive home one and grew the lead to 8-2.
After the Eagles hit its second home run of the game off Phillips in the seventh, Phillips settled down and did not allow the Eagles to reach base for the remainder of the contest. The Owls came away with an 8-3 win to eliminate Williams Baptist from the AMC Baseball Tournament.
