Women’s Soccer Opens Season With Scoreless Draw

CANTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Women's Soccer team opened up its 2016 season on Tuesday evening as they played to a scoreless, 0-0, double overtime tie with Culver-Stockton College at NX Level Field.
 
The Owls were outshot in the contest 11-6 by the Wildcats but WWU stood tall on the defensive end as goalie Rebecca Sturgess recorded six saves for the Owls to keep the game scoreless.

This was William Woods first scorelss tie since November 13, 2014 when they played Missouri Baptist to a 0-0 tie in the American Midwest Conference Tournament Championship match. 
 
The Owls return to action on Saturday, August 27 when they travel to Marshall, Mo. to take on Missouri Valley College in non-conference action.
 
Game Flow
The Wildcats of Culver-Stockton came out and started attacking early on the Owls as within the first two minutes of the contest, Owls goalkeeper, Rebecca Sturgess, recorded a save on Maggie Houska shot to keep the game scoreless.
 
About six minutes later, the Owls had its first opportunity to score as Shelby Scanlan had WWU's first shot attempt on goal, but Culver-Stockton's Kehley Bitzas recorded the save.
 
Culver-Stockton had one more shot to score in the first half as Kira Mcgrotty took a shot attempt with 20 minutes remaining in the half; Sturgess recorded the save. After the first 45 minutes of play the game went into halftime scoreless.
 
Thirty-five seconds into the second half, the Owls were called for a foul in the box and the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick. Makkel Parrott took the kick for Culver-Stockton and Sturgess made the save.
 
Culver-Stockton kept the pressure on the Owls defense as eight minutes later Sturgess was making another save, this time on a shot from Sydnie Martin. Ten minutes after Martin's shot, the Wildcats missed a shot wide.
 
The Owls had two chances in the second half to score, the first coming on a shot attempt from Renee Meyer but Bitzas recorded the save. The second shot and final shot for the Owls in the second half was by Brooke Hendrix who missed wide with two minutes to go in the half and the game went to overtime.
 
In the first ten minutes' overtime period, the Owls were the only team to collect a shot as Taytum Boyd took two shots for the Owls and both of her shots missed the goal, one high and one wide left.
 
The second overtime period saw one shot attempt combined for both teams as Parrott took the lone shot, which sailed wide. The game ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie.
 
With the game ending in a 0-0 draw, the Owls and Wildcats had to determine which team would win the Cube Cup. The team went to a shootout and WWU came away with the Cube Cup.
