Volleyball Closes Out Viking Invite With Split

MARSHALL, Mo. – The William Woods University Volleyball team closed out the Viking Invitational by falling to Oklahoma City University, 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 8-15), before rebounding to close out the invite beating Avila, 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-14), on Saturday.

With her performances over the last two days, Brittney Engelbrecht was named to the Viking Invitational All-Tournament Team. 
 
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, August 30 when they host No. 10 MidAmerica Nazarene University at Anderson Arena. Match starts at 7 p.m.

Game Flow

In the first match, Victoria Day led the Owls in kills with 14, with Tory Wiley and Stephanie Davis both with 11.
 
In the first set, neither team took charge until the Stars took a lead of four with a service run by Stefani Nell, making it 6-2.  With a kill by Day, the Owls slowly started to fight back but didn't have enough to pull ahead finding the set at 13-6. WWU took advantage of OKC errors and worked their way back into the game with a set score of 17-15. The Owls could not find the court in the next few plays making the score 22-18. Despite their attempts, the Owls fell short the first set, 25-19.
 
William Woods came out strange in the second set of the match as they tied the match at 4-4 after a Libby Dove kill. The Stars extended its lead to 8-5 right after it. The match stayed closed and the Stars led 20-17. The Owls came back and tied the 21-21 by a Dove kill. The set was tied one more time at 22 before the Owls came away with the set on a kill by Abby Ferguson.
 
In the third set, WWU came out with a kill by Wiley and traded leads with the Stars until a Stephanie Davis kill, set score 5-10 Owls. The Stars fought back but never gaining the lead over the Owls until a kill streak by Marijana Bjelobrk, the score at 22-20 in favor of the Stars. The Owls quickly responded when Wiley added another kill, making it 22-21. With another one of Kameryn Bellinger service runs and yet another kill from Wiley, the Owls took set three, 22-25.
 
The Stars made a statement in the third set, scoring seven of the first ten points, and the Owls found themselves down, 7-3. The Owls battled back and tied the set at 7-7 after a ball handling error by Sanja Vojnovic. The Stars grew the lead to 15-12 before they raced out to a 21-12 lead and the Owls could not come back and WWU dropped set four, 25-16.
 
Oklahoma City came out swinging in the fifth set as they scored the first six points of the fifth set. The Owls tried to bounce back and they trimmed the lead down to 8-5, after a Stephanie Davis kill. However, the Stars went on a run and the Owls had no answer and dropped the fifth set, 15-7, and lost the match 3-2.

Game Flow

The Owls found themselves down early in the first set as Avila raced out to a 10-5 lead over the Owls. William Woods responded by scoring the next six points taking an 11-10 lead after and Eagles ball handling error. Both teams continued to trade points and Avila took a 17-15 lead. WWU bounced back scoring the four points and did not give up the lead the rest of the set as the Owls came back to win the set 25-22.
 
William Woods came out swinging in the second set as they raced out to a 9-3 lead over the Eagles. The Owls used three services aces to pull ahead of the Eagles. Avila slowly started to answer back and cut the lead down to 13-11 after scoring six of the next seven points of the set. However, the Owls responded as Melanie Kala recorded two aces in a row and the Owls scored nine of the next ten points. A kill by Tory Wiley gave WWU the set, 25-15.
 
Avila jumped out in set three taking an early 5-1 lead over the Owls but the Owls answered back by scoring four points in a row as Day recorded two kills and Kira Krebill had one, and the Eagles recorded an attack error. Both teams traded the lead and with the set tied at 12-12, the Eagles took control. Avila scored the next seven points taking a 19-12 lead. William Woods tried to claw its way back into the set but could not and Avila took set three, 25-22.
 
Both teams traded leads in the early part of set four, and with the set tied at 5-5 the Owls slowly started taking control of the contest. WWU rallied off three straight points, before Avila rallied for two, making the Owls lead down to 8-7. William Woods responded by scoring the next five points taking a 13-7 lead and never looked back. WWU stretched the lead to 23-11 in the set and a kill by Day gave the Owls the set, 25-14, and match win.
