Men’s Soccer Defeats Graceland, 2-1, In Overtime

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Men's Soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season as they defeated Graceland University, 2-1, in overtime on Thursday night at Firley Field on the campus of William Woods.
 
With three and a half minutes to go in the overtime, Alberto Pitarch took a pass from Lendall Louis-Jacques and scored the game-winning-goal improving the Owls to 3-0 on the season. Rodrigo Alves scored the first goal of the game for the Owls.The winning goal can be found below.
 
The William Woods always returns to action on Saturday, September 3 when they travel to Canton, Missouri to face Culver-Stockton College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls offense came out firing today as they Lendell Louis-Jacques fired the first shot of the game on goal but Mitchell Hart recorded the save. Five minutes later, Matheus Schmid fired a shot that went off the crossbar.
 
After Schmid's crossbar, the Yellow Jackets countered and they broke the scoreless with just over 27 minutes to left in the first half. Ryan Schlom fired a shot that was saved by Conor Cable but the rebound went to Gerardo Salgado, who took the rebound and put it in the back of the goal taking a 1-0 lead.
 
William Woods fired another shot on goal with just over four minutes' left in the first half as Pitarch fired a shot on goal that was saved.
 
WWU came out trying to tie the game up on in the second half. Pitarch fired a shot that went high and Jesse Bowers shot two wide of the goal.
 
The Owls continued to pressure the Yellow Jackets defense as Stefan Simic fired a shot that hit the crossbar. The Owls finally broke through and tied the game at 1-1 after Rodrigo Alves scored on a Jesse Jordan pass.
 
William Woods continued to pressure in the end of the half but Hart recorded two saves to force overtime.
 
In overtime, the Owls were the only team to take a shot in overtime. After the Owls missed two shots wide and Hart recorded one save, the Owls finally put the game-winning goal into the back of the net. Pitarch took a pass from Louis-Jacques to win the game for the Owls.
