Women’s Soccer Falls to Missouri Baptist, 1-0

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team fell to Missouri Baptist University, 1-0, in both teams American Midwest Conference openers.
 
The Owls attempted 10 shots on goal in the contest but could not get a ball past Alexandra Lair. William Woods recorded seven saves in the contest.
 
WWU returns to action on Saturday, September 17th when they travel to Columbia, Missouri to face Columbia College, in the American Midwest Conference Women's Soccer Game of the Week. Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls looked to strike quick against the Spartans in the contest as Halle Schroeder put a shot on Alexandra Lair within the first three minutes of the contest. Lair recorded the save to keep the game scoreless. Five minutes later, Schroeder took another shot, but this time the shot went wide.
 
WWU kept the offensive pressure on as Shelby Scanlan fired a shot on goal, two minutes after Schroeders shot went wide, and again Lair recorded the save for the Spartans.
 
After those scoring attempts for the Owls, Missouri Baptist started to get its offense clicking into gear. Riley Janvrin and Danielle Wilde both fired two shots that went wide. Alexis Turner put a ball on the Owls goal that Rebecca Sturgess saved and Wilde had another shot blocked by Rochelle Garcia in a three minute span.
 
Both offensives continued to attack in the first half as both teams had opportunities to score, Turner fired another shot on goal and Strugess recorded the save. The Owls Scanlan fired a shot that went high. The Owls had the last chance to score in the half as Taytum Boyd put a shot on goal that was saved. The game went into halftime scoreless.
 
The Spartans offense came out clicking in the second half as they had shots on goal within the first three minutes of the game. Janvrin took two shots on goal but Sturgess recorded both saves. She followed up a three minute stretch with a shot wide.
 
Missouri Baptist was not done on the offensive end as Alexis Turner scored the first goal of the contest when she recovered a loose ball and beat Sturgess for a goal, putting the Spartans ahead, 1-0. After the goal, the Spartans kept the pressure on as they had more opportunities to score but could not find the back of the net again.
 
William Woods continued to put pressure on the Spartans with scoring opportunities as they Owls had a few shots go wide for the remainder of the contest but could not score and the Owls would drop its AMC opener, 1-0, to Missouri Baptist.
