Cougars Knock-Off Men’s Soccer, 2-1

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team suffered its first American Midwest Conference loss as No. 7 Columbia College defeated the Owls, 2-1, on Saturday night.
 
The Owls lone goal came by Rodrigo Alves, who scored three minutes after the Cougars took a 2-0 lead. The Owls were outshot by the Cougars, 11-7.
 
William Woods returns to action on Wednesday, September 21st when they travel to Belleville, Illinois to face Lindenwood-Belleville. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Cougars came out trying to get its offense going against the Owls as the Cougars fired the first shot in the contest when Michael Mayberry took a shot on goal, but Conor Cable recorded the save for the Owls. A few minutes later, Mitchell Conning took a shot that Satchel Manley blocked.
 
Coming off an Owls corner kick, Brett Hodges got the first shot for the Owls but his shot went wide of the goal.
 
Columbia scored the first goal of the contest as Zachary Felz took a corner kick and got the ball in play. A few seconds later Felz scored the goal for the Cougars putting Columbia ahead, 1-0.
 
Late in the first half, Hodges fired a shot that went high of goal and the Owls went into halftime trialing 1-0.
 
Columbia College added to its lead early in the second half. Michael Mayberry took a pass from Mitchell Conning and beat Cable for the Cougars second goal of the game.
 
Three minutes later, the Owls scored its only goal of the game Rodrigo Alves headed in his sixth goal of the season. The Owls offense continued to attack as Alberto Pitarch took a shot on goal that was saved by Iain McTurk.
 
Later in the second half, Pitarch took his second shot of the game, but his shot went high. William Woods continued to put pressure on the Cougars defense as Jesse Bowers took a shot that went off the post and the Owls trailed 2-1 with six minutes' left.
 
Bowers look was the last look for the Owls as they were defeated, 2-1, by Columbia.
