Men’s Soccer Falls in Last Seconds to No. 20 Lindenwood-Belleville

BELLVILLE, Ill. – The William Woods University men's soccer team fell in the closing seconds of double-overtime, 2-1, to No. 20 Lindenwood-Belleville on Wednesday night in American Midwest Conference action.
 
The Owls were outshot by the Lynx 28-14 in the contest. William Woods lone goal came by Lendell Louis-Jacques late in the second half. With the loss the Owls fall to 7-3 on the season and 1-2 in AMC action.
 
William Woods returns to action on Saturday, September 24th when they host Williams Baptist University at Firley Field. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls and Lynx locked up in a physical and tight contest throughout the match. Lindenwood-Belleville looked to start the scoring early as they fired two shots but the Owls defenders recorded the blocks.
 
Two minutes later the Owls countered as Lendell Louis-Jacques came down and fired a shot on goal which was saved by Christian Espitia. After Louis-Jacques shot, Lindenwood-Bellville came back and took a shot that went wide.
 
With just over 20 minutes left in the first half, Jordan Henderson came up for the back line and took a shot, which was saved by Espitia. Later in the half, Rodrigo Alves fired a shot that was saved by Espitia. Alves took his second shot of the game just over a minute later, but the shot went high.
 
With the just under eight minutes left in the half, Matheus Silva Ribeiro but the shot saved by Conor Cable.
 
The Owls had once more shot on goal in the first half as Brett Hodges but his shot was saved by Espitia. The Owls and Lynx went into halftime scoreless.
 
William Woods came trying to break the game early in the second half of the contest, as Patrick Mota came up and took a shot on goal but it was saved by Espitia. After Mota's attack the Lynx made a counter attack as Alex Acuna took a shot that Cable recorded.
 
Lindenwood-Belleville continued to put shots on the Owls net, but Cable continued to record save after save as he recorded a season-high 12 saves on the contest.
 
WWU broke the scoreless tie, with 18:25 left in the game as Louis-Jacques took a free-kick and beat Espitia for the first goal of the contest. This was Louis-Jacques first goal of the season.
 
Just over seven minutes later, the Lynx tied the contest, Andres Garza Rodriguez beat Cable on a penalty kick. After the goal, the Owls and Lynx both had opportunities to score regulation as the game went into overtime tied at 1-1.
 
The Owls had once chance to score in the first overtime, as Louis-Jacques had a shot that was saved by Espitia. The Lynx came back looking to score but each shot they put on goal in the first overtime, Cable recorded the save.
 
WWU continued to battle as they went into the second overtime but did not attempt a shot in the second overtime. Lindenwood-Belleville came out trying to score as Matheus Silva Ribeiro shot went wide. It looked as if the game was going to end up in draw but the Lynx scored with one second left in the second overtime and the Owls fell 2-1 in double-over.
