Late Goal Leads Men’s Soccer Past Williams Baptist

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team scored with 1:48 left in the contest to defeat Williams Baptist College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Firley Field.
 
Rodrigo Alves took a pass from Jesse Jordan and beat Javier Piedra for the long goal with 1:48 left in the contest to give the Owls its eighth victory over the season. Goalie Conor Cable recorded the shutout for the Owls, his fifth of the season.
 
The Owls returns to action on Thursday, September 29th when they travel to Henderson, Tennessee to face Freed-Hardeman University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls started the game off playing physical was they were called for three fouls in the first five minutes of the contest. The Eagles took the first shot of the contest, as Diego Santillan took a shot that went wide of goal.
 
Five minutes later, William Woods came back with its first shot attempt of the game when Jordan Henderson took a shot on goal but Javier Piedra recorded the game, keeping it scoreless. After that scoring attempt for the Owls, the Eagles had the next chance to score but Alberto Pitarch blocked both shot attempts.
 
The Owls had a great shot to score midway through the first half. Coming off an Eagles foul, Jesse Jordan lined up the free kick. He had the goalie beat but he put the shot off the cross bar keeping the game scoreless.
 
Williams Baptist had the last chances to score in the first half as Matheus Allonso and Fernando Lisboa had shots on goal but Conor Cable recorded the save sending the game to halftime scoreless.
 
William Woods came out of halftime looking to break the scoreless tie as in the first ten minutes of the second half, the Owls had three shots to score. Two of the shots for the Owls were saved by Piedra and the other was missed wide.
 
The game remained scoreless, but the Owls had great opportunities to score in late in the second half. Rodrigo Alves had a shot that was saved by Piedra and Anthony Moscatello took a pass and had Piedra beat put a defender came out of nowhere to record a team save for the Eagles.
 
William Woods finally broke the scoreless game with just under two minute to go in the game. Jesse Jordan found Alves who beat Piedra putting the Owls ahead 1-0, with 1:48 left in the game. The Owls did not allow the Eagles to get another chance to score and the Owls came away with the 1-0 victory over Williams Baptist.
