Women’s Soccer Falls to Lindenwood-Belleville, 1-0

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The William Woods University Women's Soccer team was defeated by Lindenwood-Belleville, 1-0, in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) Women's Soccer Game of the Week on Wednesday evening.
 
The Owls were outshot by the Lynx, 24-5, for the contest and 15-4 on shots on goal. The Owls were led in shots by Elyssa Cappaert, who had two shots for the Owls. Rebecca Sturgess recorded 12 saves in the match for the Owls.
 
William Woods returns to action on Saturday, September 24th when they host Williams Baptist College at Firley Field at 10 a.m.
 
Game Flow
Within the first five minutes of the contest, the Lynx were on the offensive attack as they had three shots. Maisie Kincaid recorded the first shot as the Owls made a team save to keep the game scoreless. A few minutes later Raven Loughridge had a shot go wide and another that was saved by Sturgess.
 
Lindenwood-Belleville kept the pressure on the Owls defense as they fired four more shots at the net within a three minute span. During that stretch, Sturguess made three saves and the Owls saw a Lynx shot go off the post to keep the game scoreless.
 
Alexis Willingham got the first shot for the Owls as there was 26:06 left in the first half and it looked as if the Owls had a goal but the Lynx made a team save to keep the game scoreless. After Willingham's shot the Owls did not have a shot until 12 minutes left in the half as Cappaert fired a shot that went high.
 
The Lynx made a big push to score at the end of the first half as they hat five shots in the last five minutes of the half. Four of the five shots were on goal as Sturgess made three saves during the stretch and the Owls had a team save. The match would go into halftime scoreless.
 
Within 30 seconds of the second half starting the Lynx offensive attack continued as Jessika Stiehr took a shot that went high. The Lynx made another run at trying to score the games' first goal but Sturgess and the Owls defense continued to hold strong.
 
Lindenwood-Belleville broke the scoreless tie with just under 27 minutes remaining in the game. Coming off a corner kick, Loughridge headed home the first goal of the contest putting the Lynx ahead, 1-0.
 
After the Lynx goal, the Owls looked to have an answer as Shelby Wiebe got a shot on the Lynx goal but the Lynx goalie, Alondra Balderrama made the save. The Owls would fall in the AMC Game of the Week, 1-0.
