Scanlan Scores Twice to Lift WWU Past Williams Baptist

FULTON, Mo. - The William Woods Women's Soccer team snapped their losing streak, defeating Williams Baptist College, 2-0, in an American Midwest Conference match on Saturday afternoon.  
 
The Owls outshot the Eagles, 17-1 in the first half and 14-3 in the second half. Both of the Owls goals came by Shelby Scanlan as she scored nine minutes apart. The win for the Owls snapped its five game losing-steak.
 
The Owls return to action on Thursday, September 29th when they travel to Henderson, Tenn. to face Freed-Hardeman University. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
 
Game Flow
Within the first ten minutes of the game, the Owls had two shots on goal, the second one making it to the back of the net. The first goal was with 35:36 left in the first half as Shelby Scanlan took a pass by Kailyn Graham and beat Jasmine Espinoza putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
The Owls offense continued to put shots on goal trying to extend its lead over the Eagles. The Owls had two straight shots saved by Espinoza and had a few shots go wide or high. About nine minutes after her first goal, Scanlan scored her second goal of the game. Scanlan's second goal was assisted by Alex Langford and Elyssa Cappaert.
 
William Woods continued to put shots on goal in the first half but could not find the back of the net as Espinoza recorded the saves. Williams Baptist got its first shot attempted right before halftime as Maddie Mead took a shot that went wide. The game went into halftime with the Owls leading, 2-0.
 
Like the first half, the Owls came out firing on the offensive end of the field. Langford and Brooke Hendrix had shots but neither of them found the back of the net.
 
Goalie Rebecca Sturgess recorded her save with 34:27 left in the contest as she stopped Marina Cacho's shot keeping the Owls ahead, 2-0. Sturgess' second save came late in the second half as she stopped a shot from Maddie Mead.
 
William Woods continued to get plenty of shot opportunities in the game but none of them found the back of the net. The Owls had 31 shots in the contest compared to the Eagles four. The Owls came away with a 2-0 victory over the Eagles.
