HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University men's soccer team allowed two late goals as they were defeated, 2-1, in overtime by Freed-Hardeman University on Thursday night in Henderson, Tennessee.
The loss for the Owls is its third in the last four games. The Owls were outshot by the Lions in the contest, 11-10, and 6-5 on shots on goal.
Rodrigo Alves scored the lone goal for the Owls.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, October 1, when they travel to Batesville, Arkansas to face Lyon College. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls offense was quiet in the first half of the contest against the Lions as they only attempted two shots in the first half. The first game with a minute and half into the game when
Jesse Jordan missed a shot high.
The Owls defense came up big in the first half as they held the Lions offense to only three shots in the half. The Lions first shot came with 34:41 left in the half but
Conor Cable made the save. The second and third shots game with just under 11 minutes' left in the first half as George Achard and Andrij Sawczuk fired shots on goal but Cable made the saves.
WWU's second shot game late in the first half as
Alberto Pitarch fired a shot on goal by Kyle Brown made the save and the Owls and Lions would go into halftime scoreless.
William Woods came out in the second half and scored within five minutes of the second half starting.
Rodrigo Alves scored the goal for the Owls, his eighth goal of the season, putting the Owls ahead, 1-0. After Alves goal, the Owls offense continued to keep pressure on the Lions defense as Alves had a shot saved and one go wide.
Freed-Hardeman's offense picked up with just under three minutes to go in the contest. After an Owls yellow card, Andrew Freire put a shot on goal and Cable came away with the save, with 2:23 left in the contest. The Owls continued to lead 1-0 until George Achard scored with 57 seconds left in the game to force overtime.
The Owls had the best chance to score first in overtime as
Anthony Moscatello had a chance to give the Owls the win but Kyle Brown recorded the save to keep the game tied. Alves followed about a minute later with a shot wide. The Owls offense continued to battle as Alves had another shot on goal that Brown saved.
Less than a minute after Alves last shot, the tides had turned as the Lions took the ball down the field. After the Owls second yellow card, the Lions, Alex Meany found the back of the net giving Freed-Hardeman a 2-1 victory over the Owls.
