HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University women's soccer team recorded its second straight shutout victory on Thursday night as they defeated Freed-Hardeman University, 1-0, in double overtime at Freed-Hardeman.
WWU scored 11 seconds into the second overtime, William Woods got the win after Freed-Hardeman scored an own goal. The Owls and Lions were tied on shots with 12 shots apiece, while the Owls outshot the Lions 6-4 on shots on goals.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, October 1, when they travel to Batesville, Arkansas to face Lyon College. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m.
Game Flow
Both teams had opportunities had its chances to score in the first five minutes of the contest, however Nina Carolissen and
Elyssa Cappaert shots went wide of goal. Both teams continued to have opportunities to score but again both shots went wide or high.
The Owls put the first shot on goal with 11 minutes to go in the first half, as
Halle Schroeder had the shot attempt. She put the shot on goal by Cassandra Tymchen recorded the save. Three minutes later, Freed-Hardeman put its first shot on goal as Sydney Dubiel took a shot that
Rebecca Sturgess saved. After Dubiel's shot neither team attempted a shot the rest of the first half and the game went scoreless into halftime.
WWU's offense came out trying to score early in the second half as
Shelby Scanlan had a shot on goal within the first 10 minutes of overtime by Tymchen recorded the save. Two minutes after Scanlan's shot, Schroeder had a shot that went wide of goal.
William Woods kept the offensive pressure on the Lions in the second half as Cappaert had a shot on goal with 30 minutes to go in the half but the shot was saved. Three minute later, Scanlan found the crossbar on her shot. After Scanlan's shot went off the crossbar, she got the rebound and took another shot that Tymchen recorded the save.
The Owls kept the pressure on as Scanlan's shot attempts continued to be on goal. With 24 minutes to go in the contest, Scanlan had another shot on goal and again Tymchen recorded the save. She also had another shot that went wide to keep the game scoreless.
Freed-Hardeman had three opportunities to score late in the second half. The first came with 11:34 to go in the game, as Taylor Woods had a penalty kick, however Sturgess made the save. About 30 seconds later, Woods had a shot go off the crossbar. The Lions and one more opportunity to score as Melissa Ross had a shot but Sturgess again made the save.
The game would remain scoreless and head to overtime.
Both teams had one shot each in the first overtime period as the Lions had the first opportunity to score when Abigail Morales took a shot on goal and Sturgess made the save. The Owls lone shot came by
Alex Langford but her shot went wide and the game went into a second overtime period.
The Owls wasted little time in the second overtime period. Eleven seconds into the second overtime period, William Woods got the win after Freed-Hardeman scored an own goal.
