Volleyball Closes out Bellevue Tournament With Split

BELLEVUE, Neb. – The William Woods University Women's Volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday at the Bellevue University Tournament. The Owls dropped the first match of the day 3-0 (23-25, 21-25, 20-25) before bouncing back to beat MSU-Northern, 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21).
 
Leading the way for the Owls today was Tory Wiley who had 31 kills for the Owls combined for both contests. Victoria Day followed with 28 kills on the day. Brittney Engelbrecht dished out 89 assists on the day.
 
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, September 7 when they travel to Fayette, Missouri to take on Central Methodist University in non-conference action. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Game Flow

The Owls and Bobcats were locked in a highly contested first set as neither team could take control of the set. With the set tied at 4-4, Peru State scored the next two points. The Bobcats continued to hold the lead, 11-8, after an Owls attack error. The Bobcats lead slowly grew to 15-11 over the Owls, before the Owls mounted a comeback. The Owls scored the next five points on tills by Engelbrecht, Wiley and Daivs. Both teams traded leads and back-to-back kills by Day and Davis gave the Owls a 21-20 lead. William Woods could not hold the lead and Peru State took set one, 25-23.
 
Peru State pulled ahead early in set two, as they jumped out to a 7-3, over the Owls. After an attack error by the Bobcats put the Owls down three, 8-5. The Bobcats grew its lead as they scored the next five points taking a 13-5 lead. WWU did not go away as they scored four points in a row, on two kills by Wiley and two aces by Engelbrecht cutting the lead down to four, 14-10. Peru State continued to hold the lead by a Kira Krebill kill put the Owls down two, 21-19. However, the Owls could not come all the way back and dropped the second set, 25-21.
 
William Woods jumped out to a quick, 4-1, lead in set three, as they took advantage of Peru State errors and a service ace by Kameryn Bellinger. With the Owls ahead, 6-3, the Bobcats answered by scoring the next five points taking an 8-6 lead. Peru State continued to lead until the Owls had a kill by Engelbrecht and an attack error by Alex Bowman tied the match at 12-12. After a Jessica Jensen service error, Peru State took the lead and did not allow the Owls to tie the match again. With the Owls down, 20-18, Peru State scored the next four points putting it to match point. The Owls scored two more points on a Wiley Kill and an attack error by Kira Shapiro but could not come back and dropped set three, 25-20.

Game Flow

The Owls and Lights were locked in a close battle for set one as both teams held leads within the first 10 points of first set. With the Owls ahead, 5-4, Montana State-Northern rallied off three straight points taking a 7-5 lead. The Lights continued to hold the lead and with the Lights ahead, 17-14, the Owls slowly started to come back and back-to-back kills by Wiley and Kira Krebill, the Owls trailed by one, 18-17. That would be as close as the Owls would get as they dropped set one, 25-20.
 
William Woods got off to a faster start in the second set as they scored seven of the first nine points of the set. With the game tied at 2-2, the Owls scored the next five points as they had two kills by day and took advantage of Lights errors. The Owls continued to lead and held a 17-12 lead after a Stephanie Davis kill, however, the Lights scored the next four cutting the Owls lead down to one, 17-16. That would be as close as the Owls would get kills from Wiley, an attack error and a Krebill kill taking set two, 25-20.
 
WWU and MSU-Northern were tied at 3-3, in set three, the Owls scored six of the next seven points taking the lead, 9-4. During that stretch, the Owls saw four different players pick up a kill. The Lights continued to battle and trimmed the Owls lead down to two, 14-12, after a Cassie Krueger kill. After cutting the lead down to two, the Owls only allowed the Lights four points the remainder of the set. Kayton Coffee recorded back to back aces in the set as the Owls scored the last four points of the set taking set three, 25-16.
 
Like set three, William Woods and MSU-Northern found themselves tied at 4-4. The Owls took the lead on a kill by Day, Davis and an ace by Coffee gave WWU the lead 7-4. The Lights got the lead down to one, but the Owls answered back on kills by Wiley and Libby Dove stretched the lead back to 11-7. The Owls continued to hold the lead and after a ball handling error by Emily Russell gave WWU a 16-12 lead. The Lights got the lead down to one, 16-15, then the Owls pulled away as they scored five of the last six points taking a 21-16 lead. The Owls did not let the Lights back into the set and WWU took the set, 25-21.
