Greenlee Leads Women’s Basketball Past Central Baptist

FULTON, Mo. – Coming off the bench Peyton Greenlee led the Owls with 21 points as the William Woods University women's basketball team defeated Central Baptist College, 72-57, on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Arena.
 
Following Greenlee's 21 points was Jasmine Brown with 13 points. Kennedy Volkart followed with 12 points and Kailey Morris added 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers. Kaycee Gerald collected 12 rebounds in the contest, while April Gebke dished out six assists.
 
WWU returns to action on Thursday, January 26th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face Missouri Baptist University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls and Mustangs offenses got off to a slow start as Jasmine Brown scored the first points of the game over two minutes into the game. A minute and a half after her first field goal, Brown hit another jumper putting the Owls ahead, 4-0. The Mustangs answered back and with the game tied at 4-4, Peyton Greenlee hit her first three-pointer putting the Owls ahead 7-4. The Owls grew its lead to five, 11-6, but Audrey Moran hit a three-pointer to end the first quarter and the Owls lead 11-9 after one.
 
Emily Gardner hit a three pointer, 12-11, giving Central Baptist the lead to start the second quarter. The lead did not last long as Greenlee hit her second three of the contest putting WWU back on top, 14-12. William Woods slowly started to pull away and after back-to-back threes by April Gebke and Greenlee the Owls led, 24-17. With the Owls ahead by seven, Haley Humphrey's hit a jumper trimming the lead down to five points, however, Gebke and Kelsey Scherder closed out the half with back-to-back threes putting WWU ahead 30-19. The Mustangs scored at the last second of the half and the Owls led 30-21 at halftime.
 
William Woods continued to stretch its lead as WWU lead grew to 14 points, 40-26, after another Greenlee three-pointer. Brown followed with a jumper in the paint and the Owls led by 16, 42-26, with 3:28 to go in the contest. Kaycee Gerald grew the lead to 21 points, 47-26, after an old fashion three-point play. Central Baptist trimmed the lead down to 19 points, 49-30, after three quarters of play.
 
Starting the fourth quarter, the Mustangs cut the Owls lead to 16 points, 49-33, but a three-point play by Kennedy Volkart and a runner for Greenlee the Owls went up by 21 points, 54-33. Central Baptist continued to battle and after runner for Emily Ridgell the Owls lead was down to 14 points, 60-46. William Wood did not let the Mustangs get any closer and the Owls came away with a 72-57 victory over Central Baptist.
