ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team scored the first 18 points of the contest and never looked back as they downed Missouri Baptist University, 85-57, on Thursday evening in American Midwest Conference action.
Jasmine Brown led the Owls with 19 points, on 7-of-8 shooting.
April Gebke followed with 14 points.
Kelsey Scherder and
Peyton Greenlee rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points each.
Kaycee Gerald and Brown led the Owls with seven rebounds. WWU shot 46.4 percent from the field in the victory.
William Woods returns to action on Saturday, January 28th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face Harris-Stowe State University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. The Owls and Hornets contest is the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week.

The Owls offense got off to a fast start as they quickly jumped all over the Spartans of Missouri Baptist in the first quarter. William Woods scored the first 18 points of the contest taking an early 18-0 lead.
Peyton Greenlee closed out the run for the Owls hitting a three-pointer with 4:55 left in the quarter. William Woods continued to lead and after a jumper by
Kennedy Volkart, the Owls led 23-5. Missouri Baptist scored the last five points of the quarter and the Owls lead 23-8 after the first quarter.
Missouri Baptist continued to battle and opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run cutting the Owls led down to seven, 23-16. WWU stretched the lead back to 10, 28-18, after a jumper by
Kelsey Scherder. The Spartans would not go away as they again trimmed the lead down to seven, 28-21, after a Jessica Moore three-pointer. The Owls grew its lead to nine points, 33-24, which they would take into halftime.
The Spartans offense continued to click as they continued to battle the Owls as after a shot by Amanda Scott, the Owls lead was down to three, 33-30. William Woods offense then came back to life and they stretched the lead back to double figures. After a free throw by
Jasmine Brown, the Owls found themselves ahead by 12, 46-34, with 5:16 left in the quarter. WWU grew its lead to 15 points after another Brown jumper. By the end of the third quarter, the Owls stretched its lead to 17 points, 58-41.
The Owls continued to grow its lead over the Spartans early in the fourth quarter. After a
Kailey Morris three-pointer, the Owls found themselves ahead by 20, 65-45, with 7:30 left in the contest. WWU continued to score and grow its lead as an old fashion three-point play by
Kaycee Gerald put the Owls ahead, 71-49. WWU did not let the Spartans back into the contest as a jumper by Brown extended the Owls lead to 27 points. William Woods defeated Missouri Baptist, 85-57, for the Owls second straight win.
